But there is no ption of disabling SATA in bios on Compaq CQ40 lappies, so how we go about it then?
Here you can use a software "nlite" and prepare a customised xp installation disc by integrating your SATA drivers (for Sata drivers search with AHCI Sata drivers in google). once the cd is ready install as you do it on desktop its so easy.

Prepare a Bootable XP Disc installer.
At first go to BIOS Setup to Boot First Priority the CD/DVD Rom Drive.
After that disabled SATA or RAID Configuration. The Bootable XP Disc Installer could not go on when you don't disable the SATA or RAID Connection.
Don't worry that you are thinking it would not detected the SATA HDD by Bootable Disc but it is. Then follow the instruction.
Good luck!

If i am helpful to you please rate me.
Thank you.

Changing OS from windows vista to xp

You can install xp on a vista laptop, you will need an xp install cd and you will need to backup your data (it will be erased in the downgrade process). As for the drivers, go to your laptops manufactures site. They will have a support section for your laptop model where you can see if there are drivers for xp. If you have the hardware that will support windows 7, I would go with that. Xp is slow and no longer supported by Microsoft as of April 2014, which poses a security risk. Windows 7 will be supported for a while and is faster and more stable than xp or vista.

Bsod is showing...in hp compacq...why??can't change my OS from VISTA to XP???why??

If you are downgrading your OS from Vista to XP, you have to repartition & reformat your HDD before fresh installing Win XP OS. BSOD is due to drivers installed which is not compatible to you hardware,

You have to check if any drivers for XP is available for your laptop model @ HP Support
You can use the "Service Tag" for your search to locate the exact model.

Hope it helps.

I unable to install Xp in my compaq cq61-132tu. The install option just doesn't get highlighted. Also, i don't have another computer.

I assume you are attempting a "downgrade" to Xp from Vista, since this laptop does not come with XP.
From the Compaq information page:
  1. HP does NOT support XP for consumer notebooks, so if you have any difficulties regarding XP, do not expect HP will help you.
  2. HP may demand you to install back VISTA if you have hardware problem to troubleshoot it.
An option to consider-put your original Vista hdd away and install new one for XP.
  3. Some of the notebook features may not work in XP due to uncertified licenses pointed in this guide.
  4. Microsoft has released three (3) Service Packs for XP, use only SP2 for the first trial. Why? Since many of XP drivers are released based on XP-SP2.
  5. Always make Vista Recovery cd/dvd before downgrade to XP. see it here
  6. You have a folder with drivers & programs that may prove very helpful after XP downgrade.
Copy folder C:\Swsetup to DVD Before formatting your hdd.
  7. If you have a pre-SP2 XP cd, get the full SP to Integrate with Nlite: SP2 Nlite HERE
The help guide for downgrading is here. There is a lot of information on this process written there.

However, if what you want is a an XP look and feel so you can compute the way you used to, change the Vista to look like XP in the display properties.
If you are trying to run non-Vista software, try running it in compatibility mode. To do this, right click on the program files and select properties and then locate compatibility..

1. You must have a Windows XP CD.
2. If there is a CD Driver that came along with the laptop try and look for the one that says (XP Drivers)
3. If no driver CD included for XP you will have to download from thier site.

Unable to Downgrade vista OS to windows 2003 or XP(CQ-LAPTOP)

During the Windows XP install it cannot find a hard drive?
The reason why Windows install does not work is because Windows XP does not have a SATA driver support and therefore cannot find the hard disk.
THE FIX FOR THIS PROBLEM.
Go into your BIOS and turn off Native SATA support or set it to IDE controller (this setting depends on the type of BIOS). Save the setting and reboot and you will be able to install Windows XP.
IF YOU CANNOT DO THIS IN THE BIOS then :-
Go to the Compaq/HP WEB site to download the SATA driver for your model laptop. This driver is used to install the 3rd party driver
during the Windows installation (during the Windows installation you need to press F6 to allow you to install the SATA driver).
