Perhaps your camera only comes with a trial or limited edition of the software. Try proceeding without the activation code and/or read through the camera's documentation very carefully.

sir, before you proceed with connecting your device be sure you installed the cd driver camed with your camcorder. this driver will recognise your camcorder to your pc and can use it with your video editing software. By the way i have a camcorder too and im using Ulead video studio or any Ulead software. Why am i using that? because its very easy to use and its not that complicated on editing. Windows Movie maker is also good but i really prefer on using Ulead. Hope that helps you and thank you for rating my suggestion.

• The USB connection only allows transfer of pictures and movies stored on the Memory stick. The videos recorded to DV tape is NOT accessible through the USB interface. You must transfer taped videos using i.Link.
• Go get a Firewire (also known as i.Link and IEEE 1394) cable to connect to your computer's Firewire port. Adding a Firewire PC card is relatively inexpensive, but make sure that card has BOTH the 4 pin and 6 pin connections, for most flexibility.
• Once you connect the camcorder with the Firewire cable, the Ulead VideoStudio will see the camcorder as a video capture device, without additional software or drivers.
