Bought this washing machine new in July 2002 - this is the first problem we have had with it - during spin cycles it is extremely loud (rumble or rubbing sound)
I would remove the back to see if anything, such as shocks, are loose. There should be 4 of them, 1 in each "corner". Shocks may have just come loose and may only need to be tightened or bolts replaced. More info, pls let me know. CharlieI would remove the back to see if anything, such as shocks, are loose. It needs to be leveled. most units are self leveling meaning they sit evenly. if yours in on uneven ground make sure you get it onto a flatter spot. should help.

There are three reasons for such awful noise during spinning. Either the drum or the bearing turning the drum. Check for drum bearing failure if your washing machine is noisy on the spin cycle. Drum bearing failure is common when the bearing seals start allowing water to enter. You can take the belt off and spin the drum by hand, and if the drum rumbles, replace the bearings.
the vibration and noise is most likely from the drum bearings wearing out to test the bearings try this out,,,
open the door, hold the top of the drum and lift it up, if it has any free lift in it the bearings are going, now spin the drum by hand and you should here the rumble off the bearings
Most noises from a washing machine occur during the spin cycle. If you hear loud thumping during the spin, the load of clothes may have become unbalanced. Stop the washer and redistribute the clothes, then re-start it. Repeat these steps if necessary. This will solve your problem.
Well it is ethier Belt, Cluch ,motor ,Or transmission. But it does sound like your transmission . The loud clunk is the brake in the gear case ( Trans.). It might have broken off.
Make sure all springs are still in their place tilt the machine back and look under it and you can see them. 2nd all legs must be level as well as the floor.
comon fault on hotpoints is drum bearings put ya hand in the drum and give it a quick flick if it soundslike it rumbles buy a new washer.since merloni bought hotpoint you prob have to buy a whole drum not just bearings
