I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB

All of a sudden, I cannot copy files FROM my Western Digital 500GB external drive to my iMac. I CAN copy files TO the external drive from my iMac. My cursor turns into that circle-with-the-line-through-it. When the ext drive is connected to PC, it seems to work fine.

Hi there! Quick question for you before I make any assumptions or suggestions: Was the drive configured and formatted using your iMac or the PC?

Hi,

Check the file system of your hard drive. If your PC is recognizing it, check if its a FAT or NTFS. If it is NTFS then you have to reformat it using your Mac and choose FAT. Mac OS recognizes NTFS as a read only drive. If you plan using it with your PC and MAC you should format it using your mac and choose MS-DOS in disc Utility. You cannot format the drive using your PC Computer with a FAT file system because of the capacity. Only Mac can format it with a FAT file system.

Can operating system (OS) that is backed up be used as bootable software on a replaced HD?

It depends. If you used a 'drive-image' program to make a copy, then you can use 'drive-image' to copy from the backup onto the new disk-drive. But, if you did a file-by-file copy, the answer is 'no'.

My Book oneT doesn't work

If it is still under warranty, Western Digital will replace it, but all your data will be gone (shipped to them, but they take no responsibility for "rescuing" your files).

What you could try is to open the case, separate the disk-drive from the USB-to-disk-drive adapter, and then connect the disk-drive as a "slave" disk-drive in some desktop computer, to see if you can access the files, i.e., that USB-to-disk-drive adapter could have failed.

Or, search online for a professional "Data Recovery" service. For a lot of money, they will repair your disk-drive, just long-enough to copy all your files.

External Hard Drive

If you plan to store movies on the HD, better buying a 1TB hard drive. WD Mybook is one of the best external HD.

To rip and store DVD movies into the hard disk you will need a specific software, like the ones below.

DVD Converter - convert DVD video to AVI/MPEG/DIVX files

Freeware converts DVD AVI MPEG WMV RM to MP3 or iPod Video

Movie2x Freeware DVD Converter Download

DVDx (freeware from labDV)

Cannot transfer files that are greater than 4GB

The lack of free space iis on your internal HD not the external. Whenever transferring files from one drive to another, you are acturally making a copy of the file to be transferred and sending the copy to the new drive. If your internal HD is nearly full, you can try to Cut and Paste the files to the external, or clear up more space on your internal b/4 tryiing to move the bigger files. Best of luck.
