I bought my laptop on 26th Jun 2008.So its a couple of months out of
warranty.for the past few months I used to hear a click when I open my
laptop. Few days back the hinge gave up.The Monitor needs support to
to stand now. Th bottom case is opening up near the the right Hinge and
I could see some wires. I didn't drop the machine or damage it
otherwise.I called the lenovo support and they say they would charge me
49$ to advice me as my PC no longer has warranty. Can someone please help.
I purchased two Y510 at the same time and both now have the same problem. Started out first making a cracking sound when opening the lid, now its obivious the hinge is breaking loose. I'm purchasing a replacement laptop from Gateway. After owning several IBM Thinkpads, that are still working, I thought buying the Lenovos I would see the same durability, guess not. Will see how the Gateway holds up.
This won't solve the problem. It is a defective design. I have contacted a firm in CA that focuses on class-action lawsuits. If interested, please contact me.
I'm a little late to the game, apparently, but I'm interested. I took good care of my laptop, so the hinge didn't break until I'd had it for two years; by then, it was well out of warranty, and apparently Lenovo "ended" the recall in April, so I'd have to pay $200-300 to get it fixed now.
Any luck with the class action lawsuit? There are 57 pages of customers with this problem on the Lenovo forums:http://forums.lenovo.com/t5/IdeaPad-Y-U-...
Today i had exactly the same problem its beek 2 years i use my laptop rarely never once liftet by the laptop by the screen but when today i opened my laptop the hinge rod just cracked at the right corner, the design has to be weak at the right corner, very small joint.Hoping to find a new hinge rod for my carefully handled laptop ideapad Y510.
I bought a u530 and I opened and closed it 5 times and the left hinge broke. The design is extraordinarily brain dead with plastic hinges connecting to a metal body. I am sending it in for repair today. If they charge me at all I will work with you on this class action lawsuit. I see hundreds maybe even thousands of people have had this problem going back 3 or more years. That is gross negligence clear and simple.

Buy a new lower case and change the hinge also
Hinges take alot of stress as they have to be quite tight to hold the screen in a certain position, alot of laptops can have over tightened hinges and cause splitting in the housing. Hinges can quite often come loose.
Make sure all screws are present around the hinge area and if you can tighten up your hinges.
If the hinges are badly damage you can buy replacments for a few $ off of ebay
