How do I restore the small icons on my task bar for things like Safely Remove Hardware and network connection status? I've tried doing it through Properties when I right click on the task bar but even though I tell it to always show these items nothing happens.
Windows usually hides the task bar icons you have not used recently. If that is the case, you must have a small left arrow < at the left of the last icon displayed. Click that arrow and the hidden icons will be displayed for a short while.
Usually the safely remove hardware is present (shown or hidden) whenever there is a removable equipement.
For the local or dial up connection, you can configure your computer to display it on the task bar. Here is how to do it in Windows XP
1. Press the Start button on the left, choose Connect To > Show all connections. You will see all your connections, each one symbolized by an icon. 2. Point the mouse cursor to the one you want, Right Click Mouse button, then Properties. 3 Under the General Tab, put a check mark in Show icon in notification area when connected 4. Click OK.

The system tray in Windows XP is the right side of the small blue bar at the bottom of the screen that houses the clock and a few other small icons. You can add icons to the system tray for ease of access, including the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon, which allows you to easily remove hardware from your computer.
Turn on the Windows XP computer and right-click the taskbar. Select "Properties" from the menu that appears. Check "Hide Inactive Icons", then select "Customize" A new window appears with all of the icons currently on the system tray, along with icons also for some programs that don't appear on the tray. Click next to the icon "Safely Remove Hardware," then check the box "Always Show". Click "Apply". Safely Remove Hardware Icon? http://www.pulpfusion1.com/demotech/e_article000253202.cfm

I guess you're trying to eject the Kindle from the task bar "(safely remove hardware". Try going into Start/Computer/right click on Kindle/ select eject. This worked for me when I had the same problem.
When you connect your Kindle to a PC, it automatically goes to USB mode, allowing access to its internal memory from the PC. The Kindle cannot display a book for reading at the same time. It would require quite complicated handling, for example, to display a book while the book is deleted by the PC concurrently. Allowing only one machine access to the internal memory at a time avoids any concurrency issues.
If you want to read books while continue charging, on the PC:
Windows XP, Windows Vista: find the "Safely Remove Hardware" button in the status bar (right side of the task bar), and select "Eject" for the Kindle device.
Windows 7: Open "My Computer", press the right mouse button on the drive icon representing your Kindle's internal memory and select "Eject".
On the left side of the player below the hold button is a hole labeled reset. insert an unbent paper clip until the unit shuts down (Blank Screen). Then press the play/pause key until unit lights up.

"removing my usb stick" - This seems like a statement, not a question.
That said, the biggest problem people have removing the USB stick from a computer is that they fail to unmount the drive before removing it. In Windows this can be done by left clicking the "Safely Remove Hardware" icon in the task bar, clicking your device, and then waiting for it to tell you that it is ready. With Mac and Linux you just right-click and unmount the drive.
Either way, not doing this can wipe your USB drive or corrupt your files.
Go to Start/Settings/Network Connections. When the window opens right
click on the Wireless Network Icon and select Properties. In XP there
should be a check box to allow display of notification when connected.
If some other OS, hold the right button down on the Icon and drag it to
the task bar. It should drop an icon for showing the status.
Before doing all of this, is there an arrow to the left of the icons? If so, click on it see if the Icon is simply hidden.
When the "safely remove hardware" icon is in the status bar (the by time) disconnet the mp3 player. After a few seconds connect it again. Then reboot the computer system. You will then be able to see the contents of the mp3 payer.
I tried and it works. Also it means the player could be removed without clicking on"safely remove hardware".
