HP Photosmart C4200 will not scan photo to Windows XP computer

I just used it about a week ago for 8-10 old photos. Now it won't scan. It will make a copy and print out a photo saved on the computer. Some of the messages I get are:
Error communicating with device.

Seh Exception

Error! An error has occured communicating with the scanning device. Please ensure that the scanning device is connected properly and try again.

Scanner and Camera Wizard: The computer cannot detect the scanner or camera. Please make sure the device is turned on and is properly connected to the computer.

It will say "preparing to scan" for a long time then the scanner will cancel out.

And last but not least is that I have made sure the usb is connected, tried different usb ports, unistalled and reinstalled the software, restarted both computer and scanner....

I have a HP 3180 and it prints just fine but will not scan and I have Windows Vista.

Hi,
The all in one solution software you used in XP doen't work with Vista.

But you can still scan and copy by using Windows Photo Gallery.

1. Click on files tab at the top in Window Photo Gallery.
2. Click on import from camera or scanner.
3. Highlight your scanner icon (ie HP C3180) then click import.
4. New scan window will popup, now you can preview or scan using this basic looking Vista utility.

Hope that helps.

Scanning photos using HP Photosmart C4200 series scanner but unable to ascertain how to save them to computer.

I had the same problem, I could scan something but I couldn't send it wirelessly to the computer to save.

Try this, go to START , CONTROL PANEL, SCANNERS AND CAMERAS and see if the HP photosmart is listed.
If it isn't, get out your HP disk that came with it and install it. After it is installed, you can scan and save from there without using the buttons on the HP.
