Setting the date and time

Everytime i pull open the camera lens cover to take a picture I'm asked for the date and time. up until a couple of months ago this was not a problem. can you advise me on how to get the camera to remember the date and time so I don't have to set it everytime I want to use the camera?

No need to remove part of the camera case. This camera (Power Shot A510) does have a backup battery that is easy to get to. Under the rubber flap where you connect the cable, there's a little door you can pull out with your fingernail. There is a CR1220 battery - can be found at any jewelry store, as it is a watch battery. I replaced that and viola! No more messing with the date/time every time it powers off/on!

There's a small watch battery on the inside of the lens cover. This keeps power on the camera memory to track of all your camera settings. If you unscrew the camera case, you can gently pull the front cover off (be careful not to pull loose the cable). You can then jimmy out the battery and get that replaced.

I have to reset date time etc everytime i turn camera on

If the Date/Time menu appears when the camera power is turned on, the date battery charge is low and the date and time settings have been lost. Please purchase a lithium coin battery (CR1220) and replace it as follows.

1. Confirm that the camera power is turned off.
2. Slide the memory card slot / battery cover lock and open the cover.
3. Hook your nail onto the date battery holder and lightly pull up.
4. Remove the battery holder in the direction indicated by the arrow. a570isbackupbatremove.gif 5. Remove the battery by pulling it up in the direction indicated by the arrow.

7. Replace the battery holder and close the memory card slot / battery cover.

If you've replaced the date battery, then the camera is defective. Being only a month old, first recommend seeing if your retailer will exchange it. If not, Canon will fix for free under warranty. Call 1-800-OK-CANON.

Lens (lens cover?) only opens halfway

Hmm, this has happened to me too now. And just like the previous two posters it happened to me once before, but after switching it on and off a couple of times it corrected itself.

Now, about a month later, it has happened again. And this time it doesn't seem like it's going to open fully any more. Out of interest how long have others had their camera before this happened? How many photos had they taken?

Darkened Images

Sounds as if your diaphragm may be sticking due to either the camera or the lens. Look at the back of the lens and work the small tab with the aperture ring set to f32 (or 22). See if the tab moves smoothly but with resistance from a spring, or if it sticks or moves roughly. If it does this with other lenses too, another possibility is the aperture lever on the camera. Mount the lens and set it for f22 or so and use your depth of field preview to see if the lens is stopping down smoothly. In either case it may need professional repair.

Nikon Coolpix S5 lens cover won't open

Hi Debscan, My 1.4 year old S5 developed the same problem and after checking out various websites I get the impression that it is a common one to these cameras. I found that if I put the camera on a level table and then turn it on (and off) 3 times the lens cover would open further with each try. On the third turn-on the lens cover would drop fully with a definite "Click" and the camera would work. The next time I shut it off, the lens would not close properly, but the same "Third times the charm" routine would always work. This may only delay the inevidable final crash of the camera, but it might get you a few more pictures out of it.

Date time setting does not program

There is not an option to remember the date/time when you power off the camera. The camera should always remember the time. If it forgets the setting when you power it off then your backup battery has gone dead. Check your manual to see if it is something you can replace yourself. I am not familiar with this camera specifically but some cameras make the backup battery accessible and some require disassembly. David Millier Advance Camera Repair
