sounds like you have bad memory. if you have 2 installed try taking 1 out and restart.if that don t work install it back in and take the other 1 out to see which 1 might be bad

This laptop appears to be over 10 years old.

My expert advice. Buy another laptop. You will be happier in the end. Spend $200-$350 on www.ebay.com

Go to Toshibas website and look up the model number of your laptop to download the User Manual as well as things like drivers, firmware updates, etc.

I am currently using the laptop model that you described. Go to toshiba support, click download, click portables, click satellite, and where it says: choose model, click show older models. Type in your satellite model on the search bar, (1805-S254) and click 1805-S254 in the results and hit GO. Now, the second thing from the top of the list of drivers says: BIOS. click the plus. Find: ACPI Flash BIOS version 1.10 for Satellite 1800/1805-S204/254/274 (v1.10; 10-23-2001; 671K)
and click it. Download the file and run it. Now follow the directions to make a BIOS floppy disk. After the disk is created, restart the computer. When the screen that says: Toshiba comes on, hit F12 to boot from a different device. Then it gives you a bunch of options. Hit the letter on the keyboard that tells the computer to boot from floppy disk. Then it should erase your current bios and rewrite the old one in. DO NOT update the BIOS! In the new BIOS, toshiba has a file that DOWNCLOCKS your processor. This is what makes your computer run so slow. Now people have complained that computer has overheated and shutdown but since i've downgraded the BIOS, it's been running just fine! Hope this helps! If it doesn't, email me at: [email protected].

If you already found the cmos battery, then try to check its "rating" and size to accomodate inside the board. After that fix it as it should be.
