Stretch stitch We are trying to sew a nylon fabric and have been told to use a zig zag stitch. We can't seem to find the manual so don't know how to set the machine. It is a kenmore 385 12102990. It has three dials on the front for selecter, lenght and width. Any ideas on how to set for this type of stitch? Thanks Tracy

Left to right - Needle position to center, Length to whatever (start at 3), and press in the Width control and hold it in while you turn it to other than 0.

Try the following operators manual. It's not the exact same model, but likely close enough.

Knobs left to right - Needle position = Center, Length to something reasonable (try 3 to start), Width - hold the knob in and turn it to other than 0.

Be sure TOP control shows zig-zag. Flip top right bar from red to black or black to red on side of machine facing you. You can then change the widths by changing the numbers on that same circle control.

SOURCE: zig zag stitches are not holding

When ever a machine is jamming up the bobbin thread, it is a result of your top tension. It is either set to low (under 4), or the thread has come out of the take-up lever. Check your threading, fromt he spool pin, down to 2 and up to 3. Three is the take up lever. From the take-up lever down to 4. Set the thread behind the thread guide and thread the needle form front to back. Low quailtu thread 9dual duty or all purpose) can also create this problem.

thanks,

Bonnie

SOURCE: can't tighten clutch on Kenmore zig zag sewing machine.

The clutch has fallen off the shaft. Remove the very small screw in the clutch release screw to remove the clutch release. Place the clutch(round thing with ears on it) back on the shaft with the center ears pointing towards the outside. Put the clutch release screw back on. Tighten it to make sure it works
properly. Put the small screw back in the clutch release screw and test it again. If it will not tighten or release properly, remove the clutch ,rotate it180 degrees and try it again. This should solve your problem.

SOURCE: My singer sewing machine will not do zig zag stitch the special stitch dial is not working properly

it would probably be a good idea to take the machine in to see if there is any broken or worn parts, since it will not do a zig zag stitch

I am trying to sew on a stretch fabric with a single stitch instead of double. The top thread seems to tight after stitching it. I have tried changing the tensions and am not having much luck. Help

Tension will not fix the problem you are having. When sewing stretch fabric with a sewing machine, use a zig-zag or stretch stitch. Test on a swatch of scrap fabric and then pull on the seam. If the seam pops, you need to increase the size of the zig-zag stitch to allow for the amount of stretch in the fabric.

What stitch should I use to sew stretch cotton fabric

Stretch cotton fabric? Use a ball point needle and probably a zig-zag stitch. The more stretchy the fabric, the wider the stitch and the shorter stitch length between the zig-zags. If the thread is popping when you stretch the seam, then widen the zig-zag and shorten the stitch length.

I would like to know what stitch number to put my sewing machine onto to stitch stretch material. I have a Elna 40 sewing machine regards Judy

Looks like stitch #06 might be a stretch stitch. You could probably also use a slight 08 or 09 zig-zag. Unless you are sewing something really stretchy (lycra) IMHO, a slight zig-zag is fine and actually is a lot faster than a stretch stitch which takes a few stitches forward and then one or two stitches in reverse. The stitch #09 is something that I use frequently for stretch fabrics.

My new Singer machine ("Curvy") purchased last week (3/2014) has a page on stretch stitches. The way the book is written, it lists Straight Stretch Stitch on the same page as Ric Rac, HOneycomb, and...

A zig-zag is also a stretch stitch. Usually, a "built-in" stretch stitch will stitch forward a couple and then stitch backward and then stitch forward again (time consuming and uses a lot of thread--but suitable if that's what you want). Whatever you are sewing, whether it is a seam or finished raw edge and the fabric is stretch, you will need to use a stretch or zig-zag. A straight stitch will pop the threads as soon as the fabric has to give.

You can test your stitches on some scrap fabric and see what looks best.

An Over-edge stitch is just that, just a stitch over the fabric edge. It probably would not be suitable for sewing a seam.

My machine is skipping stitches

Lower the pressure on the feed dogs, use a stretch stitch, and longer stitch length. Be sure to use a good quality thread, and maybe go lighter weight thread.

What would be a "stretch" stitch setting?

For a stretch stitch use a narrow zig zag stitch. Use a ball point needle with knit fabrics.

Trouble sewing lycra fabric using a zig zag stitch

You have the machine set for blind hem stitching. Change the stitch selector to stretch stitch, which is a single, in line stitching zig zag stitch.

Zig Zag Stitch not working

THis problem occurred as I was sewing on Neoprene. I was using Gutterman all-purpose thread and a size 80 needle. Tried switching to a size 70, then to size 90. Still unable to zig zag. After inserting a test sample of cotton, the zig zag worked perfectly, so I knew it was not a mecahnical problem. I switched needles again. This time to size 90 for stretch fabric. Voila! Problem solved.
