VHS plays in colour and DVD plays in black and white.

Hi, just purchased a secondhand Telefunken DVD/VHS player. Video plays in colour while DVD plays in black and white. Tried player on a different tv and both DVD and VHS played in colour. So was wondering if you might know what the problem could be with my tv.

Before purchsing this machine, I had seperate DVD player and VHS player, DVD played in colour but Videos would only play in black and white

There is a circuit in the color section to put the tv to black and white if the color subcarrier is missing from the broadcast signal.
it is called a color killer and needs to be adjusted.
it is for a technician to do.
it operates off the 3.58mhz color subcarrier.

Possible cause: the incorrect TV and DVD broadcast formats.
NTSC and PAL are two of the world's major TV broadcast formats, but they vary depending on how often the system projects color images. NTSC is the abbreviation of National Television System Committee. Its standard is mainly used in Japan, the United States, Canada, Mexico, etc. PAL is the abbreviation of Phase Alternating Line, which is mainly used in China, Hong Kong, Middle East and Europe. These two systems are not compatible with each other. If you play NTSC on a PAL TV, the picture will turn black and white, as will the NTSC system.

Jvc gr-ax35 only plays black and white on 3 different sources i.e. tv, dvd recorder player and usb capture. could this be tape detrition or dirty video head

i would take it and get it serviced
i think the tape isnt running at quite the right speed perhaps a dirty bearing
usually if you get black and white from a colour video
then its either recorded in black and white or playing back black and white

so if you record then test it using a a vcr and a converter vhs tape box then you can see if its recording in black and white

then youll know its something too do with either the colour carrier etc component of the video its outputing

dont think its a dirty head
but you can clean it easy enough
i use a plain manila envilope and use the inside of its paper
the outside is smooth the inside is rough
its just right to clean the head drum
and some small lint free cloth to carefully clean the mecha
i use IPA isopropile alchohol {get from the chemist}

Green tint on TV screen when playing DVD's or Videos 2nd problem and can't record anything

1: Hi i would recommend trying the recorder on a different tv to check if the problem continues. If the green tint is gone then its the tvs inputs. If it is still green then its the player or the cord. Try a different cord if the green tint is still there then the player has a problem.

2: Now for the VHS to DVD. There are general a lock out encoded on the VHS if it is a store bought movie. This is to protect the content on the VHS from piracy and that would case the DVD to be blank. The VHS to DVD are made for converting your home videos like family vacations and stuff you record your self and not for commercial movies like the ones you bye at the store. If you want to convert old VHS movies to DVD you would have to get another VHS player and another device in between the VHS player and the VHS to DVD recorder.

When I play a DVD, it is in black and White. When I play the tv it is in colour. Can't get the DVD to play in colour!

You have one of several possible problems, ranging from best case scenario to worst case scenario:
A DVD video that is supposed to be black and white - try a different disc.
Some setting on the DVD player is set to monotone - check manufacturer's instructions
A bad set of cables connecting the dvd player to the tv - test a known good set of cables
A bad output on the DVD player - test DVD player with a different TV.
A bad input on the TV - try another input if possible, test TV with a known working video input.

Will a VHS from America play in my LG V181 video/DVD player

Hi
All American VHS recordings will be in NTSC system. If your player is compactable with NTSC system, you can play the VHS in your system. If it has no NTSC syste, the tape will play, but colour problems and vertical rolling will occur. OK.

No colour when watching dvds ok for everything elese

You will have to make sure you are connecting them with the red and white cables on audio and the yellow on video at both ends, as both your dvd and tv have low def and hi def cabling options.

That means Red and White to Audio at each end and Yellow to video at both ends. If you connect the yellow cable to one of the other three connectors at iether end you will only get black and white as they are meant for a different type of connection.

To get the maximum quality out of your sets you may want to purchase a set of Hi-Definition Component cables which will give you a set of five cables, still red and white for audio but now red, green, blue for video.

Hope this heps a bit more,

Chris

Picture only shows in black & white when playing DVD

Same problem with an older JVC player. One end of the S-video cable was loose. Pushed in in tight and everything ok again. Cheap fix if it works for you.

VHS tapes are black and white

The tapes are B/W or one of the playback video heads is not making contact with the tape. The video head may need to be adjusted. You can take it in to get it fixed or buy a new one. The unit today is worth around $25-$30.
