I am repeating a previous answer, since it covers most of the common problems :
The Palm Z22 is, I have found out, a bullet-proof design in regards to reliably keeping your valuable "DATA" safe over time. The Engineers at PALM really did a good job of Data integrity compared to many other devices. HOWEVER -- there are 3 common problems with the growing AGE of the Z22, 2 are with the dying batteries, and 1 with the years of wear and tear on the touch screen. The battery is a typical square, thin, modern Lithium battery, wired in with two wires ( + positive, red, and - negative, black ) that can be
taken out and replaced if you take the unit apart. In a brand new, in-the-box package, the battery is dying simply from old age. If the Z22 was used heavily, the constant cycling from dead to fully charged wears out the battery even more. The Touchscreen is a thin layer of plastic stretched over a sheet of glass, with a tiny air gap in between. Over time, the top plastic layer deforms - with hot and cold, air pressure changes, and being pressed by wearing the unit in a pocket, purse, briefcase, or even in a drawer with pencils, pens, and staplers etc. It is very important to have a hard cover over the screen! Other than just having the battery loose its weak charge continually, there is a problem with the unit getting into a state of BLACK SCREEN - it does not charge and remains "apparently" dead, since the logic circuits are in an invalid state, and it can only be reset if the battery dies COMPLETELY to remove the power on the logic circuits.
I have covered the topics of the battery problems, the data problems, the screen problems, and the disassembly, maintenance, and security, and how to get data off the unit, particularly to the new Windows Operating Systems that were developed AFTER the Z22 was no longer made. This is at
kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html
I have ripped apart the Z22 repeatedly, and posted pictures of the various steps to service these units. There are links to aftermarket software to transfer data, and examples of how to USE the Z22, for valid purposes. This should be a one-stop source for any information or troublehooting the Z22, for those who have the Z22 and want to keep it operating!
good luck

HI,
This is a problem that you will have to contact Palm about. There are a couple ways you can get in touch with them. By phone but you have to pay for that. It is about $25. There is also a free chat that you can do to get support. Here is a link to their contact page. Scroll to the bottom and there is a link for the free chat. Good luck and best wishes.

Palm Z22 touchscreen is not working

The Z22 is rock-solid in safely storing your data, but, because of the AGE of the Z22, it is subject to 3 common failures, and the screen is one of the most common. It is imperative to have a hard piece of plastic over the screen at all times to prevent anything from touching it.

I have a few tricks listed on my web page dedicated to maintaining, fixing, and interfacing your Z22. The page is at
kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html

Try a few of the tricks. The worst that can happen is that the tricks do not work, in which case, you are exactly where you started in the first place, - nothing lost! If one of the tricks works, IMMEDIATELY get a cover for the screen to keep it working!
The screen is available for $9 U.S. free shipping, and is fairly easy to replace yourself with just a screw driver of the jeweler type.

good luck

The touchscreen of my Z22 is broken

The Z22 is a bullet-proof device for securely saving your personal data, and full marks go to the team at PALM for its solid design. However, the AGE of the Z22, over the last decade, results in 3 problems - the batteries are all dying, and the delicate plastic touchscreen top layer is deteriorating - simply through AGE. When you say the touchscreen is "Broken", I would guess you mean that it does not respond to touch commands from the black plastic stylus that sits in the slot on the back, side, of the unit, when stored. I have never actually seen or heard of a screen that is physically "broken" - like the thousands of iPod, iPhone, Motorola RAZOR, and other touch screen phones that you see today, with cracks running across the broken GLASS. It "Could" happen that the glass screen under the top plastic touch layer is, actually "BROKEN", with the resulting cracks, but this is unlikely, since the trim around the screen is raised a HUGE distance, compared to today's touchscreens.
You can easily replace the screen for $9 if you wait for free shipping from CHINA, or, you can try a few tricks I learned on my Z22 over the years. I have put it in the freezer - which worked temporarily, heated it with a hair dryer - which worked temporarily, and peeled the top plastic layer off the screen- which worked temporarily. I have also replaced the screen with a new one. It is IMPERATIVE to put a hard plastic cover on the Z22 at all times- or you will eventually loose the screen again...
My Z22 page is at:

I hope this helps you to get your Z22 back up and running

have fun

Touch screen on Palm Z22 does not respond

The Data on your Z22 is rock-solid safe, but unlike the answer that states to do a RESET- DO NOT ! The touch screen problem has nothing to do with resetting, it is a failure of the soft plastic top layer of the touch screen. There is a tiny, remote possibility that the logic circuits are out of sync and the touchscreen really is mixed up in a software state, and a SOFT RESET may reset the touch screen, but this is almost unheard of ( but does happen).
I have an entire page on the Z22 and how to maintain, repair and interface it. It is at:
kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html

I would suggest trying a few tricks listed on my web page, and see if you can get the screen to work again. It is IMPERATIVE to get a hard plastic cover over the screen to keep it working!

Please read over the information on the Z22 page.

good luck

Stylus taps to screen don't result in any changes

Hi there JL Dakota. I had many problems with my Z22 over the years. The top layer of the screen is a plastic sheet that must remain stretched completely ABOVE the lower layer of glass that it sits above. Going to Florida, from a colder climate, for example could WARM the screen up a bit, and allow it to stretch, and hit the lower layer. If it touches the lower layer, it shorts out, and will not respond to any touches after that. Putting it in the freezer will shrink the top layer of plastic temporarily, and allow touching the screen to push it down where you touch. Usually this problem is the result of years of NOT protecting the screen from being pushed on by having a HARD COVER over the screen - for example, keeping the Z22 in a pocket, a shirt pocket, a bag, a purse, a briefcase, even in a drawer full of pens, paper, stapler, etc. would TOUCH the screen, and eventually stretch it. If you see my website analysis of the Z22 kidbots.com/WEBADD/Z22_PALM_PILOT/Z22_PALM_PILOT.html , there are many photographs, and discussions on the various typical Z22 problems that I ran into, and the solutions. These include touchscreen problems, and include putting in the freezer, using a heat gun or hot air hair dryer, splitting the top layer and bottom layer of the screen apart, putting in a new screen ($9 US), etc. I discuss many other issues. Immediately getting a hard cover over the unit at all times is the single most important factor! Once the screen top layer is warped, just sitting the Z22 down upside down might let gravity pull the screen gently away from the glass substrate. Rubbing the screen, using your fingers, sitting the Z22 down on an angle, touching the screen with anything, all could cause it to deform and touch the bottom layer constantly... the link again is below. The general circuit board is incredibly tough, and the amount of abuse it took when I tore it apart repeatedly is amazing. Generally it is bullet proof. The dying battery, the extremely delicate touch screen, and the possibility of buttons shorting, are the biggest problems. Do take a look at the full discussion on the subject at the link. Good luck.
