I had the same issue occur on my ln55c650 and they had to replace the power supply pc-board. Seems some issue with power module in the TV rather than the side panels. Luckily for me, TV was still in warranty.
Yes, I used to work in Best Buy and one of the key things about rear projection TVs and the reason they push those service plans on you is that the tubes/colors need to be calibrated each year. You can do this yourself by checking out the following website:

Sorry to say, it sounds like a bad picture tube, But could be also the capacitor that filters the screen voltage on the crt drivers. In all my years though, your complaint has been the picture tube. Good Luck.
