A friend has a Beeman Sportsman RS2, he cocked it inserted a pellet closed the barrel then sat it in his closet. When he sat it down it went off. What the heck could have caused it?

The larger screw controls the pull weight, that is how many pounds weight on the trigger.

The front smaller screw controls the length of the first stage, whether you want a short first stage or a longer one.

The rear small screw controls the lenght of the second stage which can be reduced to zero.

Check the trigger guard screws. If the trigger guard has been loosened or removed, it can effect the proper position of the safety actuating lever (the lever in front of the trigger adjustment screw), preventing a full cocking stroke.
