Likely it is flooded. Try starting without choke. Move control lever into choke position, then back to start position. This sets a high idle throttle/no choke. Don't touch throttle or it will drop throttle position from high idle to idle. Set decompress and pull starter cord no more than 3x.

You may have to remove spark plug and pull start cord several times to get the excess fuel out of the cylinder and crankcase. Dry spark plug with compressed air or starter fluid. Reinstall spark plug. Pull starter cord no more than 3x. If it doesn't fire, remove plug and inspect tip. If completely dry, no fuel. If wet either no spark or it has flooded again, check for spark.

SOURCE: wont start by kick start but will by pull start

it could be the gaskets around your carb are bad and leaking air if so its thinning your gas fumes with more air then what is needed inside your combustion chamber witch is causing your engine to stop running like that. best of luck

Model 026. when trying to cold start, why does the compression button pop out without starting?

Its ment to.!!! that's the job of a decompression button.

Procedure:
1.push on off switch into full choke position, depress the decompression button.
2.pull the saw over until it 'fires' once.
3. the decompression button would have popped back up, click the on/off switch up to half choke.
4.pull saw over and it should fire up, revving.! blip the throttle to return it to tick over.

I also have a stihl chainsaw model home light 240. I just had it sharpened and a new spark plug put in by the repair guy. I used it for 30 mins and it kept stopping until I couldn't start it again

Starting procedure for Stihl.
(cold starting)

Place saw on floor (flat clear surface).
Make sure chain break is on.
Hold throttle in, while pushing on switch all the way down.
Place right foot in the flat of the rear handle.
Place left hand on top handle.
Pull starter handle until saw fires, it should then cut out.
Click the starter switch up 1 click to half choke.
Pull starter handle again untilsawfires up. note: it will be reving because the trigger is loched on, (blip the throttle once) and it should go to tick over.

There should be np need to keep playing with the choke when the saw is warm. No need to lock the trigger when starting warm.

Warm starting is performed by holding the rear handle between the thighs rather than on the floor.

Primer button will not fill up

The primer bulb pulls fuel from the carb, into the bulb, and pushes it back to the tank. If the bulb does not fill there will be a number of reasons why, firstly if the saw is new, there will be oil in the carb from the starting prosess at the factory, the saw will start without fuel in the bulb, but will take many more pulls to get it going, once the saw starts and runs for a few minutes the oil in the carb will clear, and the bulb will fill normally when depressed, if your arm is not up to cranking the engine many times, remove the top cover, remove the air filter, dribble some fresh fuel/oil mix down the filter elbow, the saw will start after a few pulls. If the saw is a used machine the problem may well be a blocked fuel filter in the tank.

I have been trying to turn on my chain saw. Ive pulled the handle back by the trigger gave a few pull on the rope. then i pushed the button in on the side also the push the button back in by the trigger...

The chainbrake should be activated when starting the chain saw. Activate the chain brakeby pushing the front hand guard forwards.b>Cold engine Start position, 1: Set the start/stop switch in the choke position by pulling thered control outward - upward.Decompression valve: Press the valve to reduce the pressure in the cylinder and makestarting easier. Once the machine has started the valve will automaticallyreturn to its original setting.Air purge: Press the air purge diaphragm repeatedly until fuel fills thediaphragm (at least 6 times). The diaphragm need not be completely filled.Grip the front handle with yourleft hand. Hold the chain saw on the ground by placing your right foot throughthe rear handle.Pull the starter handle, 4: Pull the starter handle with your right hand and pull out thestarter cord slowly until you feel a resistance (as the starter pawls engage)then pull firmly and rapidly until the engine fires.Push down the red choke control: As soon as the engine fires which can be heard through a"puff" sound, push down on the red choke control.Pull the starter handle (6): Keep on pulling the cord powerfully until the engine starts.

Had difficulty starting chainsaw DCS4610 for the first time. Think it was flooded. Problem now it wont idle.

Is this a new saw? If yes return it or at least ask for a recommended repair facility. Your saw is actually a Dolmar (owned by Makita) and a fine saw. In order to meet EPA requirements they are set very lean (many 5100s seize with factory settings). To protect your investment and not invalidate your warranty I recommend it be adjusted by the
professional recommended by the merchant where you purchased it or one recommended by Makita.
The starting procedure is probably similar to this:
Start Procedure
Cold:
  1. Ignition on/off to on.
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws); pull starter and listen for an attempt to start. once heard (usually two pulls; no more than 4).
  4. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  5. Push (open) choke pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull).
Warm:
  1. Ignition on/off to on.
  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed.
  4. Push (open) choke, pull starter until it starts. (usually first pull).
Most new owners miss opening the choke after it tries to start or do not hear the pop when it does and flood the saw.

New Homelite 16" chain saw is difficult to impossible to start.

Read and follow the start procedure in the manual, most say to open the choke once the saw attempts to start. Most operators miss this or do not hear the cough and flood the saw. Your manual is probably similar, if not successful with the following maybe time to return it. One thing that might impact starting, what is your elevation? Your saw was setup at near sea level, if you 4000' it may need an adjustment. The store where purchased will probably recommend someone if asked.

  2. Set compression release – optional step even if saw is equipped with a compression release.
  3. Pull (close) choke, set fast idle (done when choke closed on some saws) – Do not pull with choke closed.
