2002 jetta tdi died while shifting into 4th gear

I bought the car used and imediately replaced the timing belt and all associated components, rollers, bearings, tensioner, myselft, about 20k miles ago. Worked smooth as far as I could tell. I did not drive it until replacing the belt so I don't know how this car drove before. If I floor the pedal while on the highway, it will get to about 3k rpm and then just stay there. It would not increase or decrease so I would just shift up to another gear. I remember this happening in 3rd consistently. I'm not sure if that is normal.
The other day I was shifting from 3rd to 4th and the car just died. I tried to jump start while I coasted down the hill but it would not start. Once at a standstill, I turned it over. It sounded like it was struggling to turn-over. It did not sound like it wanted to start. It sounded similar to a car that is out of timing.
I see air in the fuel line under the hood.
I haven't done anything to it yet.

Negative. I did not loosen the IP pulley, just pinned it and I made sure I got it in the correct hole. Not having any previous driving experience with this, it seemed to drive fine, after I R2 the timing belt, for the past 20k miles.
Could the filter be clogged? Any guesses about the air in the fuel line?

    Appreciate your help.

    Thanks,

    Jim

I finally pulled the top timing cover off, lo-n-behold the timing belt is broken. I'm guessing the belt I purchased was inferior. I'll know when I pull everything apart and check the tensioner, bearings etc.

    Thanks for your help.

I appreciate your attempt with the 1989 jetta.
The diagram is unfortunately of the back of the relay holder. If you could get me a pic of the front that would be great.

    Thanks,

    Jim

How did you set your timing? Did you set it using Vag-Com?

At wht mileage should i change my timing belt on my 2000 jetta tdi

You should change the timing belt & timing kit (tensioning roller, water pump, guide roller) at every 90000 km (56000 miles).

Replacing of the cam belt / timing belt, rollers and tensioners on VW Golf iv is now due at 180 000km service. Is it a recommendation to replace the water pump simultaneous with the cam belt?

Yes. Most defiantly replace the water pump. If the pump bearing should collapse it will break the new timing belt and do a lot of damage to the valves and cylinder head.
Good Luck with it

Removing Factory Gear Shift Knob for 2001 Jetta

On my 2000 jetta glx, I had to replace both the shift knob and boot as one. It is built as one unit. You have to pull the boot up over the shift knob, break/bend a clip to "unlock" the shift knob then pull up. I hope the new knob you got has the boot built in and comes with a new clip.
