Whenever I leave my Tomtom720GO idle for weeks, I usually put it on the charger overnight, push the reset button, turn it on and it worked. This time it did'nt. I assumed my battery is not holding a charge and needs replacement. But before attempting I logged on to Tomtom's website and clicked on their Support link and found out that you must do the following:
1. Make sure the charging light is on when the unit is in the charger (I had mine charged overnight)
2. Push and hold the reset button for 15 seconds (I used a toothpick)
3. Push and hold the ON button for 5 seconds.

You will need to reset the computer, find reset button or disconnect battery and cycle through the start and shift process, then leave disconnected, overnight if possible or at least 2 hours, before reconnecting, start and let idle for 5 minutes before shifting to drive, then drive car on open road and give a firm push to the throttle, try manual shift, if no go, inspect tcm.
hi
try a soft reset, first make sure your battery is full.
if you use a sd card, remove it. push reset button on bottomside of your tomtom, its in the middle next to "reset" push it with a small pin, paperclip or something, for at least 15 seconds. after that push on/off button for minimum 5 seconds. if used push back sd card.
good luck
Make sure that you leave the unit plugged in for two hours, and remove the sd card, if you have a card in it.
On the top or bottom of the unit is a usb port and a reset button, take a paper clip and open it, then put the paper clip into the little reset hole and push in for 30 seconds.
Turn on unit, hold the on button for 5 seconds, now turn off, now hit the reset button again as said above and then power on and run though your menu and see if this did the trick, if not you might have to send the unit in for repair.
If your TomTom GO/ONE/RIDER is frozen, won’t turn on or does not
behave as it should, it can be fixed by resetting or restarting your
TomTom device. A reset will not delete any data from your device, with the exception of SMS messages on TomTom GO500/700.
Connect
your GO/ONE/RIDER to the power charger. If you have a power charger,
use it to power your TomTom GO/ONE/RIDER. If you do not have a power
charger, make sure that the battery in your TomTom GO/ONE is fully
charged. Note: You need to charge your GO/ONE for at least 2 hours using the 12-24V cigarette lighter adapter.
Reset
your GO/ONE/RIDER. To reset the unit, you simply have to push a
straightened paper clip (or something similar) into the RESET hole on
the device.
On TomTom GO 910/710/510, the RESET hole is located on the bottom of the device.
On TomTom GO 700/500/300, the RESET hole is located on the bottom of the device with the word RESET right next to it.
On
TomTom ONE, the RESET hole is located on the bottom of the device, with
the word RESET right next to it (just below the SD card slot).
On
TomTom RIDER, the RESET hole is on the bottom of the device, behind the
SD card door. When opening the SD card door you will see the RESET hole
on the left, right underneath the SD card slot.
Your TomTom GO/ONE/RIDER is now reset. Finally, press and hold the power button for 2 seconds.
First , try a re-set through the 'reset' hole underneath the tomtom. 1 quick short press is all thats required. Unlike others suggest , you do not need to hold it in for anything longer than half a second. You should feel the switch 'click' as its a tactile switch. Don't press too hard as you can damage the switch and cause it to lock ON. Once pressed , try turning the tomtom on as normal. Sometimes a tomtom battery can drop below its normal "shelf" voltage ( normal is about 3.8 volts ). A tomtom charger has a protection circuit inside to stop or slow the current it gives out if there is a short. If your battery HAS dropped volts TOO MUCH ( less than 3 volts ) the charger can "see" the tomtom battery as a "short" and the charger therefore shuts down and doesnt charge the battery. You could leave the charger connected and HOPE that the very small amount of current it's putting out will eventualy bring the battery up over 3 volts. Once it is up near its "shelf" voltage ( called shelf voltage as that is the voltage the battery is at 'on the shelf' ie . when its not powering anything ) the charger will begin to charge as normal....... OR ... you can gain access to the battery and charge it from a bench power supply that has voltage and current meters. Once again , once the battery voltage gets something near 3.8 volts the normal tomtom charger can be used to charge it. You caould connect another normal battery to the tomtom battery just for a few seconds ( not recommended and can be a bit dangerous ) if the normal battery is such as a PP3 9v type it should bring up the tomtom battery to over 3.8 volts in a few seconds. The tomtom can then be charged as normal. .............. It is also possible that some internal IC's ( chips ) have blown inside the tomtom and unfortunatly this would require a specialist repair centre to replace them as they are really very very small and are not a normal soldering job. Good luck. ... if this post has helped you or interested you please rate the author.
leave on charge for two hours, then with the SD card out hold down the
reset button at the back of unit for ten seconds and then the 'on'
switch for ten seconds.
