My opal 4018A worked for about 6 months. then one day it froze up and hasnt worked since. I reset it, and it turned on just long enough to say i have a dead battery. When i plug it in to charge it starts charging, but quits and the screen turns black after about 2 minutes. Now it will no longer turn on at all! My computer also does not show it when I go to My Computer. help!

I need to delete the "Pre recorded" songs that was on the MP3 player, as I do not like them.

How do I do this?

Here is what I did to get it to work (on a Vista pc):
1. download the latest firmware update: http://download.rcaaudiovideo.com/downloads/OPAL_4GB_8GB_FWUtility_v1.2.8.0.exe
2. uninstall any other RCA software
3. run the firmware update. it will eventually say to connect the device.
4. while pressing the 'play' button, plug the device into the computer.
5. KEEP THE PLAY BUTTON PRESSED - windows discovered the device (m4018)
6. press start on the firmware upgrade
I had to do this process twice, as the first time windows gave me an error (access denied). After the second time, I was able to complete the upgrade and access the device normally.

Ok, I think these just have a mind of their own. I had all the same issues everyone else did. I tried downloading the new firmware, but it always said "connect device" and wouldn't find the Opal. Then I tried it one last time before hucking it out the window, and magically....there it was! it loaded the new firmware and am currently charging the battery. we'll see what happens.

SOURCE: RCA M4018 8GB MP3 Player

Mine didn't recognize either, so what I did is go into the device manager, find the opal in the listings, double-click, disabled the device, re-enabled it, at which time it shows that there's a firmware error. I then re-installed the driver from the cd, unplugged the opal, plugged it back in, and for whatever reason, the computer then recognized the opal as a mass storage device, instead of a portable music player. The computer now sees it everytime, and all I have to do is drag and drop any files I want into the opal. Works like a charm. Hopefully RCA will provide an updated firmware program in the near future, but this might work for you for now. Good luck!

Player is not recognized by any computers

Try downloading the software and/or drivers for it before connecting it to your pc. If you no longer have the disk that came with it - go to the manufacturers website and download them there. Don't connect it to your pc until the software is installed. The computer won't recognize it until the software and/or drivers are installed.

My player won't recognize music files on my computer

Your player is mp3 , that means it can only play mp3 files . Did you check the format of the music files on your computer before you download them to your mp3 ? They must be mp3 format also , otherwise they can not be played on your mini device . If they are not mp3 files , then you need to convert them before you download them to mp3 format before you download them to your mp3 player . If the files on your computer are in mp3 format , then the problem is in the software of your mp3 player . To fix software problem of your mini device , you need to update it's software . Updating software must be available on the manufacturer website .
good luck .

MP3 Player not recognizing Real Player Video Files

That Opal's Easy Rip Software does not recognize Real Video format naturally. You may have to download a free program called Riva FLV Encoder to convert the Real Video files to AVI format. Once they are in AVI format, the Easy Rip software will recognize the file and convert them to your player. If you have lost your installation CD, you can get the Easy Rip software from:

Turn your player on and go to settings. Scroll down the menu until you see "PROTOCOL" and switch it from MSC to MTP. Your computer will now recognize your device, and you will be able to add whatever you want to it.

Down loading songs

RCA's website has the software/manual that you need if you lost the CD
Use Windows Media Player to transfer music and delete songs
As far as downloading songs, you can sign up for a wide number of music services - each one has a different download method, and the company website will explain how to use it. The problem with this RCA player is that it was tied to Yahoo!'s Musicmatch Jukebox svc, which was cancelled in October 2007, so you will have to find another music service. Some music services will recognize the RCA player directly, and you can use their svc to download the songs directly to your player. Other services you will have to download the songs first, and then transfer them to the RCA using Windows Media Player afterwards.
