The water tank that is removable for filling has a locating socket/valve that connects to the MALE part of the iron rest and it seems to be a loose fit.It has a black seal which i assume needs to be replaced?

Honey! It's broke. You can manuever the little black valves out, but you will only find the hole in the clean water tank. I have the EXACT same problem. My advise to you is to take the valves, caps and handle off, sell them on EBAY and then buy you a whole new clean water tank.
SOURCE: toilet tank fill valve sprays water towards lid
Hi bpmorr1,
It may be that the fill tube has come disconnected . It runs from the top of the fill valve to the overflow. The overflow is the tube that runs up the middle of the tank. The fill tube runs from the top of the fill valve to the top of the overflow tube. Kohler has a little clip that can sometimes come undone and cause spraying.
If that doesn't do it, turn the water off to the toilet and take off the tank lid. Partially open valve ( Slowly). Locate where spray is coming from. If it is in the area on top of the fill valve then yes, buy anew one. ( Fluidmaster )
Please rate this response and good luck, Phil

replace the o-ring gasket on the tank fill cap. It is a simple neoprene "O" ring you can buy at your local hardware or NAPA aauto parts store for less than $3.00.

I rang Saeco service centre about my leaking water tank and they posted me a new tank - no questions or need to return the faulty item. I believe there may be a bad batch of tanks which leak because of faulty valves.

Hi
The magnet in the water tanks is either upside down or has sunk to the bottom of the tank. It should float to the top of the cage it is in and it should have a flat top not rounded. If its rounded side up the magnet is upside down. This is what would cause your problem.
