THat error means you need to download the updated software, you have the 3.0 software. go to golfgps.com, choose the gps8, and download software, and do the second download software link.
The cable can be a pain. It has to be slid all the way down to the very bottom of the socket on the gps, even when its tight, it might not be connected all the way. I usually wiggle it left and right while pushing it down.
when you install the software, it asks for email and password. Click on where it says, "click here to login" and it should ask for your email once. put in your email and password, hit submit, and you should be good to go. I keep it on my home, work computers, as well as a laptop for roadtrips.
