Inspect the unit for a fan near the compressor not to be alarmed some do not have a fan if so insure that it is running while the compressor is running also some defrost problems will cause this the unit runs for a long time heating the compressor and by way passing the heat along

Sides of upright freezer are very warm to the touch

Good Afternoon Chuck, thank you for your inquiry! From what you have described, it seems like you may be referring to the perimeter hot tube. It is normal to be warm to the touch; however, since it may feel hot to you, I would suggest verifying that you have the proper clearances around the freezer. You can refer to your owner's guide for those specifications. If you do not have an owner's guide, you can download one at the manufacturer site.

If the clearance is fine, you may need to clean the condenser coils. As part of routine maintenance, you can remove the toe grille (located at the foot of your refrigerator) by unsnapping the sides and lifting outward towards you. Now, using an extended vacuum attachment and condenser cleaning brush, remove dust buildup from condenser coils on left side underneath freezer. Cleaning condenser coils typically resolves this issue.

But, if clearance is fine and the condenser coils are free from dust and you are still feeling too much exterior heat, you may need to check with a local service tech to determine what else could be causing this issue.

Frigidaire freezer compressor is hot to the touch and not cold inside

If the compressor is hot, then the temperature inside the unit may be compromised if there is a sealed system issue or a restriction in the unit. Call a professional to be safe.

After defrosting the freezer it will not cool

Don't panic about the hot sides of the freezer. It is quite common on all the freezer (make/model).

After defrosting, your removing the full temerature out of the system. It will take atleast 30 ~ 60 mins to come back to set temperature. This again depends on the load inside.

My wife called me home to a thawing freezer. The outside stuff was thawed and the temp was 40 inside. The sides were hot on the freezer and it is a 20 cubic foot upright that is 12 years old. have not had...

Check the fan down by the compressor to see if it's working . If not , it needs to be replaced .Also check the coils to make sure they are clean of dust , lint , etc... Is the fan inside the freezer working ? The hot sides are good . This means the compressor is working ( the " freon " attracts the heat inside the freezer , pulling it out , to make the freezer cold . The air flow over the sides , help dissapate the heat ) . Without the model number , I cant look up to see how the freezer is made .

I have an upright Frigidaire freezer. The outsides (left and right) are hot to the touch. Is it a problem?

No. Instead of exposed coils on the back side, many (most) freezers place the condenser coils near the outer wall of the freezer to disipate the waste heat removed from inside the freezer. It will not be as noticable when the freezer is not running, and is completely normal.
