    picture looks blotchy with black blotches everywhere

Well i have this tv also, what you should do is navigate to the menu/picture and scroll down to hit reset, and it should reset to the various defaults - i.e. standard / vivid  etc

Try this.... First, go into picture menu and reset it. Next turn contrast all the way up. Turn the sharpness all the way down. Make sure the tint is in the middle. Adjust brightnesses accordingly. If that don't work, just drop me a line and i will explain more

    Hey this helped heaps but i think it might need a bit more adjusting. what should the colour be on? and the backlight? and the colour temp should be on normal?

have you tried resetting the pixel setting for the screen

well most lcd and plasma tv's above 36" will look grainy on standard definition because they are made for high definition so if you do not receive a high definition signal to your tv then that would most likely be the problem

P42HDTV Visio Plasma TV. The picture is bad grainy/snowy.
Doing some warranty work for Visio, I ran into this same problem. I replaced the video and power boards, among other things. Turned out to be a bad panel, which isnt viable to replace. Best to get Visio to agree they made a lemon (as all their products are in my humble opinion) and have them send you a new tv, or even better, buy a tv that is NOT a visio. You can get great deals on LG and Samsung these days, both decent quality tvs.
