Check returns make sure open and filter in filter or recirculate
SOURCE: my intex pool pump is surging and won't stay primed???
i think its pump side first as its easier to push water through a filter rarther than trying to **** it , Also the only reason it could loose its prime is through air getting in the system.
SOURCE: lost prime
Turn off the pump at the timer and remove the lid to your pump where you empty the debris from the basket. Get a hose or bucket and fill that resevoir with water and get the lid back on as quickly as possible. Turn on the pump and it should start to prime. On the filter, there is a air relief valve. Depending on the filter, it will pinch and twist, or there is a knob to uncrew. Doing that as the motor is running allows tbhe air that has built up inside to puge out. Once a steady stream comes out close the relief valve. May need to tryh it more than once.

IF IT DOES NOT FILL CONSTANT FROM POOL IF IT IS AN INGROUND YOU WILL HAVE TO HELP IT BY PUTING A GARDEN HOSE WATER ON IN SKIMMER PUT A RAG AROUND HOSE FILL CUP TURN OFF RETURNS OPEN BLEEDER VALVE ON FILTER LET WATER FILL START PUMP AND OPEN RETURN VALVE SLOWLY YOU MAY HAVE TO DO THIS SEVERAL TIMES MAKE SURE AFTER YOU GET WATER FROM BLEEDER YOU CLOSE MAKE SURE ALL CONNECTIONS ARE TIGHT INCLUDING CLEAR CAP ON PUMP THESE ARE AIR BLOCKS IF ABOVE GROUND CHECK ALL HOSES AND CAP

the pump must not have any air leaks in the suction side of it,, or it will just **** air and not water,,, water is very heavy you see, however i think its the impeller in the pump thats the problem,,,you should try to put water in the out let of the pump so you fill the pump with water first if its dryed out it may just wear out the impeller before it starts to **** water up, if this still dont work turn off the stop **** and strip out the pump to look at the impeller any wear on it and it will need a new one fitted
i hope this has help you, good luck

yes---you need to have no air getting in the lines.

Suggest having a check valve installed to the front of pump the intake , then backwash pool hooking a stong wet dry shop vac to the outlet where waste water come out ,this will assist pump .Important to make sure that a return lines and skimmer lines completly open . Make sure pump lid is tigh ,and the collar clamp between filter tank and the multiport is also good and tight .This will fix your problem now and in the future . You can also follow the same method to prime pump without the check valve ,but this will continue to be a problem and a procedure you will repeat without check valve .Backwash is my recommendation so the sand soak s good during the filling with vacuum assist . This sand filter with cakedupped materials .
