Every time i close my dell laptop, to put it on standby, and then open it again, there is a big black border around the outside, its not the resolution, but , to fix it for the time im on it, i have to go to the settings on the desktop and make the screen resolution 1024 by 768 pixles. but the thing that bugs me is that everytime i shut down/close lid, it just makes that black border, and the screen small. thanks for your help.
The cable connecting the motherboard to the screen might have a few open wire. It's why the problem occur when you move the lid.

Unwrap very gently the cable from is sticky tape and you should find a dozen of very small wire, one or two might need to be reconnected together.
Or You might also have a problem with the VGA card, in that case your only chance is to find a replacement one on ebay, or if the VGA card is integrated to the motherboard, then....live with it.
