Self-propelled feature does not work at all! Any suggestions?

The Self-propelled feature is not working. Any suggestions? I just purchased this used mower from a neighbor who moved and she did not mention to me that this feature was not working! The manual expressly says "self-propelled." After mowing the grass in the back yard I felt like I had been in the hay fields PUSHING the bailing machine!!!

You might have a broken belt to the self propelled or a broken spring or whatever engages the self propel. Take off the cover and see if anything is broken or missing. Have someone engage the self propel while you are watching and see what is going on.

Move the carpet height control switch to a higher position if the vacuum is difficult to push. If the setting is too low for the carpet being cleaned, the brushes press against the floor preventing the vacuum from moving easily.Set to a medium-high height setting then check.Slide the "Self-Propel" button to the "ON" position if the cleaner does not self-propel. -----------

Check for the belt under the cover that drives the mower. If you remove the belt, you will have things the way you prefer.

Check the plastic part, which the the self propelled cable is attached to. (release the handle, tilt it back. You should be able to see the cable attached by a screw to a black plastic arm.) It is either broken or the cable is lose.

There is a cable from the handle down to the transmission on this machine that breaks all the time or the cable is mounted to a plastic piece that is broken. That will need to be replaced.

Self Propel doesn't work on Hoover Wind Tunnel
Your self propel wire could be broken. Lean the vacuum back like you were using it. If you stand in front of the vacuum look down and to your left. When you move the selp propel button you should see a wire move. If not then it's broken.

I have replaced both the v-belt and the larger belt with Hoover brand belts and the brushes still don't turn properly and the self-propel function doesn't work. It seems that when I lower the handle all the way down toward the floor it works fine, but no one can vacuum this way. Is there an adjustment to belts to tighten them up? Otherwise I have to get it in to the only repair shop in town which is an hour's drive.X

I would advise you to ALWAYS to FIRST UNPLUG YOUR VACUUM before beginning any service procedure. Hoover U6437-900 / U6439-900 Windtunnel Vacuum. It is not so much the belts, the 2 belts are only part of the solution. The average belt change is every 4 to 6 months as a rule and to change them @ the same time. The Hoover Self-Propelled works on when the handle is lower to a comfortable position then the self-propelled drive may just need and adjustment. There is a self-propelled rod that controls the self-propelled feature and it either needs adjustment or replacement or the part that hold it may be broken but either one can be fixed. So feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer with questions. So if you need further assistance, please feel free to contact your local vacuum cleaner dealer in your area or in the yellow pages, or contact the factory phone number or website to further assist you with your questions.

Self Propel
