All i'm trying to determine is where this system was offered at and approximately the price at the time and a similar replacement today.

I got one about 2 or 3 years ago for a Christmas present from Target and it was on sale for $89.99+tax. It worked great the first year, then the fan started going crazy in the middle of movies by making a high whirring noise, then it would open when I tried to close it and vice versa, then when it was stuck on DVD mode, it would freeze and then shut itself off and I'd have to bring it back on manually. But it still is working to play movies/cd's, playing from my TV as the surround, as well as the radio. Sound quality could be better as well as bass performance though
Recently (Dec 2007) purchased one on eBay for $20 plus $25 shipping (all the way across the US - - the shipping price was not out of line considering the size and distance).
No idea about original price.
You might want to ponder why you would need audio from a TV in the first place if it originates elsewhere like a Cable Box. The fewer hops and interconnects a given signal takes on the way from the source to your ears, the better (and cheaper, too, as optical or HDMI cable is expensive). You COULD skip the TV entirely.
