Yes. To disable your Dogs, remove the tray from your machine(a soft tug should dislodge it from the rest of the machine) and flip the dog switch that is revealed on the back of your machine. As a warning, it will be incredibly difficult to turn the dogs back On, as the switch takes a good bit of force to switch back, it is all mechanical in that respect.
As Meff answered, the button near your needle is actually your Back button, for locking off stitches, or for going backwards. This machine does not have pedal-controlled backwards motion. For continuous backward sewing, hold the button down.
