Losing internet connection when I try to connect laptop to wireless router
I have cable modem connected to my desktop with XP installed on it. Internet was working fine in that time. How I bought laptop and Belkin wireless G router because I want to have internet on my laptop (with Vista on it) in other part of the house. What I can see now is that every time I connect to the network with my laptop I lose internet connection (after a few minutes of surfing sometimes few seconds) and on the connection icon it says just local only, in the same time I don't have internet connection on my desktop too. When I turn off my laptop and then turn off both modem and router and then turn them on I got internet again, sometimes it works again after just running the Belkin setup program in my browser and cloning mac address, setting connection type to dynamic IP address... everything like it says in setup guide. Laptop have integrated on it Intel pro wireless n card if this information helps.
And one more thing that I have just discovered. When I turn off desktop computer and try to connect to internet just on the laptop everything works fine, so I guess that problem shows up just when both desktop and laptop are on the internet. Any solution? And one more thing that I have just discovered. It works when I disconnect the modem and connect it again, but the same thing happens now after two hours or so and then I lose internet again. Could the problem be that I use before on the same laptop linksys wireless g router on another cable modem? It works when I disconnect the modem and connect it again, but the same thing happens now after two hours or so and then I lose internet again. Re: losing internet connection when I try to connect...
Your cloning the mac address - thats the problem. It should use it's own mac address to connect to the modem. You need to power down the modem, then repower after a minute or so to let it connect to the new mac address. The problem you are seeing is due to network collisions betweenj the desktop and the router with the modem.

To connect to the Internet you need a few extra things aswell as a network or wireless card and install the LAN or wireless driver. 1. You need to sign up with an Internet service provider. 2. Connect a LAN cable from your computer to the DSL or cable modem 3. You need a DSL or cable modem and connect and configure the modem to inaccordance with your Internet service provider's instructions. 4. Install Internet Explorer if it has not been done. 5. If everything has been done correctly, when you open Internet Explorer youcan access the Internet. If you have a wireless router and it is connected to the DSLor cable modem then - To connect to yourwireless router, the router needs its wireless settings to be configuredwith the SSID, encryption key etc., also the wireless cards in all thelaptops/computers needs to be configured with these router's wireless settings. Then the laptops/desktop computers can communicate with your wireless router.

As long as the router has wireless antenna's on it or indicates it is a wireless model then all you need to do is turn on the wireless function of the router. You do this by access the router, open a web browser and try either http://192.168.0.1 or http://192.168.0.100 one of those should be your router. Log in and go to the wireless settings. There you can enable it and configure it.
From there, as long as your laptop has a wireless network card built in, it will see the wireless network and you can just connect to it...
From my search on it, it is not a wireless router.
This means you need to attach a hub or a wireless router to your cable modem so that more than one computer can connect to the internet simultaneously.
Go out and buy a wireless router. Connect the wireless router to your cable modem.
Connect your desktop to the wireless router with an ethernet cable.
Then you should have internet on your desktop.

YOU WILL NEED TO GET A WIRELESS ROUTER TO BE ABLE TO USE THE LAPTOP WIRELESS, iT IS A VERY EASY SET UP AND CONNECT THE DESKTOP WIRED AND THE LAPTOP WIRELESS TO A WIRELESS ROUTER.
you could try getting a wifi adapter and creating an access point, you can connect that way if your ps3 has wifi I have a laptop with windows XP Pro and have been trying that my desktop PC with Vista Home can see it. MY Components: -Desktop PC with Vista Home (Main PC, connected to Internet with Ethernet to a Linksys Wireless Router B and G). -Get internet thru cable TV (broadband),from this cable modem plugs to router and from router to PC Vista(desktop) -Linksys Wireless G/B Router -G-Card for my Laptop Windows XP Pro and -Playstation 3 capable of sharing info and use printer
At the moment all of them have internet w different IP's (000.000.0.001, 000.000.0.002,etc.). What I want to achieve is that I can use the Printer that is connected via USB to my PC Vista (desktop) and share files. Right now the only thing been able to do is that my PC Vista see my Laptop but Can't find my PC on my laptop. Anybody, Help? -When I turn On my media sharing in my PS3, my internet on Laptop loses it while PS3 search and find, then, because laptop lost wireless, the PS3 looses the laptop and I get wireless back. I knowis a stupid setting but tired of workin back n forth. Thanks
you have the internet on desktop pc and you want to connect your laptop right?
open control panel select network set up wizzard and follow instructions for shared network.
if you connect dsl to notebook you need to have installed modem device drivers and configured device and done basically everything you had to do on pc,by disconnecting dsl from pc obviosly youre gonna lose the internet.
get your self a wireless router if not already have one , that way you set up pc wired and link laptop via wireless
I may be able to help with this...but I need a detailed description of how you have things connected between the XP desktop, the cable, modem, the Linksys router, and the laptop. Also, is the Linksys router new?
Typically, the wan port on the wireless router connects directly to the cable modem with a cat5 network cable....then the desktop pc connects to the router...on port 1 for example...with a similar cable. Once the wireless router is set up properly, the laptop should then be able to connect using wireless.
Your router must be connected properly to the cable modem. This must be to the wan port on the router.
Next, the router must be set-up accordingly to recognize the modem's internet connections. Please ask for the IP address.. and other relevant informations from your internet provider.
Set -up your computer using the internet connections wizard on each of your respective computer.
This should work fine if all connections were correctly configured.
And one more thing that I have just discovered. When I turn off desktop computer and try to connect to internet just on the laptop everything works fine, so I guess that problem shows up just when both desktop and laptop are on the internet. Any solution?
