My gta4 game freezes within a couple minutes of starting, every other game works fine. The disk is fine, works on friends console and worked for a few months after being bought.

Happens to my old Xbox 360. Unplug the power cord from the wall and leave it overnight, then plug back in in the morning and see if it works. (If it doesn’t unplug again this time only for 5 minutes )
This is more than likely a communication problem from
the C.P.U. to the cd rom drive , and possibly a hard drive
error . Units that have a lock up (freezing) have been remedy
in most cases with a re-flowing of the C.P.U. and in some
cases a laser that does not increes to full brightnessin order to read Duel layer games (gain kink) If the console freezes with no game
then it's the C.P.U. and or G.P.U. . that's allot of possibilities but
with out having the unit on my test bench it's hard to narrow it down.
You have obviously damaged the disk. I think Gamestation or Game does a thing in store that can repair damaged disks but I think thats only scratched disks. It would be worth a try taking it in and trying to get it repaired.
Best advice is to contact Rockstar, they might have had simular complaints about the game, the proof is in the pudding though, basically proving that it was the game that destroyed itself and not a defective console that did it, it also contacting MS to see if they had complaints.
From what you are though, it sounds like the laser is being told to get to close to the disc, causing the grinding noise and the groove in the disc.
hey guys. the problem is that the blue ray reader is some how broken and it won't work. mine kept freezing during games like after 3 mins. and it wouldnt read any more discs for that day. you need to change the blue ray reader and that costs about 175$. thats alot of money and its probably not worth it.
