There are two things to check that you can fix. First, try replacing the handset (curly) cord. A broken wire in the cord can make this happen.
If that's not it, watch the hookswitch. That's the plunger that goes down when you put the handset in the cradle, and pops back up when you lift the handset. If it's stuck down, you will only get speaker and no sound in/out of the handset.
Try swapping the handset and cord with a working phone. Those handsets are known to loose the transmitters. As for the ringing, have someone make an intercom call to your extenxsion. Do not answer the call...while the light is flashing press the volume up button several times. www.dyna-tech.us

OK, the Nortel T7208 set works only on a Nortel system.
It has only one line cord plugged into it, cause the telephone system can be programmed for more telephone lines and features from the system.
If you want just a home (analog) telephone service; look at Aastra/ Telematrix/ there are others - 2 line sets.
ONLY buy this Nortel set is you have a Norstar system. Otherwise the set will not work for you. It needs a system to run off.
