Check your cogs. Pull the top off agitator off and look inside.
Depending on model has different typed of cogs that slide and catch when working properly. The do wear out.
Also known as "dog ear cogs". Very cheap parts. $2.

This is usually the agitator dogs have worn out or broke. These are very inexpensive and easy to replace. There is a video at www.appliancehelponline.com/servicemanual.html this will walk you thru the proper inspecting and replacement of these parts. You can also enter your model # for diagrams and illustrations of your specific model. Not all models are available. All parts come with installation instructions.

I had the same problem 1 month ago, its probably the motor coupling for the direct drive. Its a small rubber Ring + a plastik drive. Its easy to change and not expensive.

It sounds like there is a dead spot in the timer. The timer is the control device behind the large knob on the right. The timer part number for you machine is 3955761 and runs about $150.00 for the part.

replace the dog ears in the upper part of the agitator not expensive and not hard to do ,,,, pop the cap off the upper agitator remove the 7/16 bolt and lift off the upper part and replace the plastic dog ears and reinstall!

check the agitator coupler located under neath the agitator,when they wear it will sound like bad bearings,its held on by a 9/16" bolt

Do you have an age of the machine and model number? Is there a "spin only" cycle? On older machines, there was a center knob you could slowly rotate, one click at a time, to advance it through its cycle. Can you do that? If the unit is agitating, I don't believe the belt is your issue. Age and model please.
