I was only thinking as far as the G3 line. Yes, it is likely a G4.

    Sorry, Ken

I thought PowerBooks stopped at the Pismo, like my old one, and that was 400 or 500 MHz PPC. iBooks sort of started there but Intel MacBook/Pro start at 1.6 GHz.

You didn't say what MacOS version, which PB model, which software and version/date (yeh any, but give some examples.)

Have you run Disk Utility and Verified the Disk or Repaired it if needed?

Have run DU and Fixed Permissions?

It is unlikely to be a virus--very few exist.

Hard drives usually get flakey and give errors but a noise requires an immediate backup and a prayer.

Mac powerbook G-4 will not start up with battery in. it boots without the battery but the fan is not on and it shuts itself down within 30 minutes. please any help will work

You can try swapping out the memory / booting with only one stick.

And you could also try a PRAM reset...but it's a long shot.

More than likely a key component on the logicboard has failed and it will need to be replaced.

It's too bad I really like the 12" powerbooks they're awesome. If you plan on upgrading you could always get a 1.5ghz 12" for around 400 now. Or you could just jump up to the new macbooks.

It's always sad to let a nice machine go...GREAT...now I'm sad about my old G4 12" that I had in college that died :(

Hope this info helps...let me know if you have any other questions, I'll try my best to help.

Powerbook Aluminum G4 15 booting up problem

The backup battery connects directly to the logic board. From the symptoms you are describing (rather clearly, thank you), it seems apparent that your logic board may be faulty.
There are two more things you can try.
1) Reset Open Firmware: Unplug-replug your backup battery, then boot the system holding down Control-Option-O-F. Your machine will boot into Open Firmware. Type the following commands, pressing the "return" key at the end of each one:
reset-nvram
set-defaults
reset all
Your machine should restart at this point. If it starts successfully, you should be done. Otherwise,
2) Reset the Power Manager. Turn the machine all the way off (no power). Simultaneously press Shift-Control-Option-power button, then release. (Do not press the fn (Function) key during this sequence.) Wait five seconds, then press the power button. If it starts successfully, you should be done. Otherwise, you will need to see a man about a logic board, which is probably not a cost-effective repair on a 1GHz G4.

CS3

What is the processor speed on your powerbook? It needs to be 1Ghz or higher. CS3 will not run on a slower machine. That could be the issue.

Black Screen

Thinking about this one I really think the video had nothing to do with the black screen. I would try to things one is reset the power management. Not know exactly what Powerbook you have I will give the most common way. Remove the Battery and the power cord from the powerbook, wait a few minutes then hold the power button for about 40 seconds. Then put the battery and power cord back in and restart it. The second thing to do is boot from the install disk that came with it and run the disk utility. I have also seen bad RAM do this but you would get at least a chime on startup.

M-audio firewire solo

I just bought the Firewire Solo and had the same issue with my MacBook. I have OSX 10.5.6. The drivers that came on the CD were for earlier OSX version. If you go to M-Audio's website (www.m-audio.com) and then click on Support. Go to to drivers & updates, search by the criteria they give you for your specific system and then download. Although they don't currently have an updated version for 10.5.6, I downloaded 10.5.5 and it seems to be working, although I'm running into an audio input problem when hooking up mic and guitar....no sound. I'm thinking I'll just have to wait until M-Audio comes out for an updated version for 10.5.6. Hope this helps.
