Make sure that the printer is turned on.
if you have the printer settings, you can check the configurations.
but if you have windows xp installed on your system, you can check the control panel, printers and faxes, then right click on the printer, you must set it as a default printer, and uncheck the use printer offline.

Hope this will help you solve your problem .

I just purchased a Dell Inspiron i570 computer. I hooke my HP C3140 up to it. It shows as my default printer but the status shows as offline. How do I change it to online?

Offline means the printer is off. You should check printer to see if it is off, then turn it back on. If it is already on, check the cable (usually usb printer cable) to make sure the cable is securely plugged in to computer and and to printer. You might also need to reboot your Dell printer too. After all these, but printer still says offline, you might need to delete that printer in control panel, printers and faxes and reinstall again. If this is a case, you need to follow the printer installation correctly for it to work. Let me know if I can further help.
Thanks

Our hp color laserjet printer is not printing... all the ink cartridges are new and inserted correctly... we have no idea what's wrong

There can be a number of things that are wrong so bear with me as I list some suggestions or possible solutions.

Always, ensure that your cables are securely connected between the PC/Printer and your AC Power cord is securely plugged into the outlet as well as the back of the printer. Additionally, make sure that the printer isn't indicating an internal problem such as low toner, paper jam or some error code on it's display. If everything on the printer appears to be normal, proceed to the next paragraph, If there are any error codes or messages on your printers display, you'll need to look those up to clear those issues before proceeding.

Open your print queue in your computer, (Control Panel > Printers> HP Color Laser or name of your printer) verify that your printer is seen as the "Default" printer and that it isn't currently selected to work "Offline".

If it shows that it is the "Default" printer, and it is NOT selected to "work offline", then let's try the next step. If for some reason it isn't the "Default" printer, you can select it to be so. If for some reason it shows that it is "Offline" uncheck that selection.

Under your printer "Properties" (right click on your printer, bottom selection on the drop down menu) you will have a "Self Test" button. Click this button (only once), observe your printer and see if it prints a test page.

If your printer shows no error messages, all cables are secured (always double check), your printer doesn't show it is offline in the printers queue, it properly prints the test page then at this point it should be working correctly.

If the steps I have mentioned above don't work, please provide more detail as to the printer model, any changes that you have recently made (software installed, cartridges changed, etc.) and we will find you a solution.

The HP printer is connected but the icon shows "offline"

Go to control panel, then select printers. Then, from the list of printers (if you have more than one), right click on your printer and make sure "Use printer Online" is checked.

Hope this helps.

The printer will not print. it shows that it is offline. i went to the "services" menu and restarted the printer spooler and the printer went to ready but it wouldn't print and then went back to offline....

First thing to do here is to unplug the printer from the computer and restart the computer , then once the computer is already back that's the time you connect the printer back and lets see if the printer will be detected by the computer, if still not and printer is still showing offline, better go to control panel and gp to printers and faxes and click on add and follow the wizard to install a ewn printer that should correct the problem.....

Cannot print to network printer

Is this printer installed on a server and shared over a network? Or is it installed independently on each workstation?
If it's on a server, printing could be "paused", or set to "use offline" Go to the "printers and Faxes" dialog box, and 'right click" on the printer icon, is there an option to either "resume printing", or "use printer ON line"? If so, select this option.
If it's not on a server then it would be extremely unlikely that this condition would happen on all workstations
Other than that make sure that the Subnet mask is set correctly on the printer.
If that doesn't work....it's probably time to try re-installing the driver.
