I have a RV, 1987 Cruiz Air II with a Onan Emerald 1 Generator 4.0 KW on it. Generator will run with the rocker starter switch in start position. Shuts down when starter Switch is released.
Check all the ground wires and make sure their not broken or loose. If the wires are good next check the neg. Wire to the coil. Too check the swiitch make sure you have continuity too all the post when the switch in the on position, this requires removing the switch.
Check AC output AVR most common suspect.
The switch is bad -- needs replacing.

I have resolved the Problem with my Onan Emerald 1,
4 KW Generator. The problem was in the Generator Brush Block. It was the Brushes. I accessed the Brushes and cleaned them. Muchh wear was on them, but for now, I cleaned them. After cleaning them I put the Generator Brush Block back, and it started. I did a load test, and it worked just fine.
I ordered new brushes and will service the Slip rings when I receive the brushes.
