Hi
It sounds as if the tone arm has become unbalanced. Make sure the turntable is on a firm flat horizontal surface and at the opposite end of the arm from the needle there will be a weight and a means of altering the position of weight on the tone arm. This weight keeps the needle on the record but only lightly when positioned correctly. If positioned too far from the pivot post the needle will as you have experience skip virtually straight across the record. You need to adjust the weight so that the needle just sits in the groove and plays without being too heavy. It is best to use a record you are not too worried about for this testing as the test record can sometimes get scratched.
Hope this is helpful, if so would you please register that with Fixya
Cheers
Does the needle actually contact the record? If not, you may be missing a "pad" under the record, or you may be simply missing the needle that needs to be there to follow the grooves.
Going on what little you have written, the most likely cause is a worn or bent needle. http://www.turntableneedles.com/search.asp?keyword=793-d&search=GO is the needle type that should be correct for your Teac SL-A100 Turntable.
If you lower the tonearm to the record surface, and it just slides towards the center, chances are the stylus(needle) is either broken or covered with dust. Clean and inspect. For more information, please visit my website at audioserviceclinic.com. Thank you.
SOUNDS LIKE NEELDE BROKEN.TO TELL PUT FINGER UNDER NEEDLE PULL BACK FINGER GENTLEY AND YOU SHOULD FEEL A POINT ON THE END OF THE NEEDLE.IF NOT OR UNSURE SEE IF YOU CAN SEE THE END OF THE NEEDLE THERE SOULD BE A SAFIRE OR DIOMOND IN THE END OF IT THAT SITS ON THE RECORD IF NONE IS SEEN REPLACE NEEDLE.
HOPE THIS HELPS

Hi, the black disc is a spacer for use with records that have a large hole in the centre designed to be played in a jukebox. Have you removed the stylus and checked the tip. It sounds to me like the tip has broken off. Cheers John. [email protected]
Two causes the stylus is worn, or there is not enough pressure being applied to the stylus. Most cartridges track at 2-3 grams. The weight at the end of the arm should be set around this figure and slowly moved higher till it tracks without sliding and without creating too much rumble in the sound. If you have to take the weight up high, then that's a good sign the stylus has gone. Or that the arm itself has a fault on it somewhere (when tried with a new stylus installed).
You either need a new stylus (there not called needles anymore) or the counterbalance has come loose (at the end of the arm). Therefore more weight needs to be applied.
