I've had my Alpine CHM-S620 6-Disc CD Changer for approximately 6 years, bought at Circuit City. Beginning 3 years ago it began to turn off and on, initiated by pushing the track change button for CDs or adjusting the volume, or mostly for no apparent reason at all. It does this whether playing a CD or the radio. It then stabilizes and plays for several minutes before it does it again. I've taken it into Circuit City for routine maintenance each time but the interval between that and each outbreak of the problem keeps getting shorter and shorter. Holding the On/OFF button seems to keep the music playing but that of course is untenable. I live in central Florida. Is my CD changer perhaps at the end of its life? Do you know what's wrong?

Well your changer has seen better days, but not dead yet. It can be repaired, but it's gonna cost ya. There are pro's, and con's in the debate between repairing, and buying new, but that's for you to decide.

Alpine makes some of the best, and longest lasting product's in the car audio industry, so getting it repaired isn't a bad idea, but the cost of changers has come down ALOT in the last 6 years so it may not be any cheaper to get it fixed. If you like the Alpine brand, then fix the one ya have, because Alpine no longer manufactures CD changers.

BTW if you don't have a local repair shop, I recommend United Radio service in NY, they are fast, and good.

Try tapping on the changer. Sometimes a gear gets stuck inside the changer and tapping on the changer frees the gear.

Alpine CHM-S620 6 Disc CD Changer Components

sounds like the changer was plugged into the antenna jack of the radio. this means that you can run it through any radio simply by sending a signal to a preset station on the radio and listening to it through tuner. the control unit ran the changer itself. you may be able to obtain replacement cables from pacparts.com
