My PTO will only work in drive mode. Not live 540 or 1000

PTO relay NC contact or wiring.

if the blades turn freely then you are going to have to replace the pto or ignition switch,take the drive belt off,does the pto work?,if not,it is electrical,check switch then pto,then pto safety switch

pto going out or stater going out run till it does then replace i the red neck saya it the pto replace if you cant live with it till burns out

No it isn't hard to change. But before you do, check the wire connection at the pto clutch it's self to make sure it is making a good connection. George

wires to the pto solenoid incorrect and not wired properly through the switch
did you put the correct shims under the flange of the pto mount as it it is incorrect distance , the pto teeth will say jammed in the transmission gear teeth
suggest that you take it to a shop that fits pto and have the installation checked before you damage the transmission

That is normal for a live pto. If your tractor has a two stage clutch you should be able to stop the PTO with clutch all the way in (as in push the pedal all the way down). It should be transmission independant, meaning it will work even though the transmission is not turning AND if you are running something that has a lot of inertia, it won't push you around by driving the rear wheels even though you have the clutch in.

I have the exact problem, have to start with PTO engaged?

If your tractor does not have "live pto", then neither the pto shaft, nor lift arms when the clutch is depressed.
I don't think any 2n's, 9n's, or 8n's came equipped with a live pto.
