Problem with my Gaggia Classic (manufactured 2010). After making expresso the portafilter sometimes locks and cannot be removed. Sometimes venting the steam wand allows removal. Any thoughts. Thanks.

SOURCE: Steam Wand Broken

I soak the steamer tip in flat cola overnight to clean out milk deposits. Run water, not steam through it after that to rinse.
Sometimes I need to use a toothpick to lift off the softened deposits.

SOURCE: same problem with my classic gaggia.

Hi Marc

Just bought one this week with exactly the same problem. As a last resort I opened it up to find the pump had come off the rubber support kinking the pipes beneath so no water could get in.

Undo the 2 philips screws on the top, take off the lid and water filler spout and take look. Looking down from the front of the machine, the pump is at the back to the left. If it's just floating in space as mine was, simply push it gently back into the rubber support beneath making sure you don't kink the pipes.

Mine came by DHL from Italy with no right side up marked on the box, so no wonder it came loose!

Hope this fixes it.

Matt

SOURCE: No water coming through portafilter to make espresso.

You have a stuck check valve. Try running the pump with the steam knob open, then shutting it then, opening it 4 or 5 times and see if it will pop open. Make sure that you don't have the portafilter in at the time you are doing this.

Shower holding plate stuck

If the shower holder is stuck, it it probably stuck with lime or coffee oils. You could try backflushing with a little descaler if the gasket is still in place. That will dislodge some of the lime and then can be pried off with a flat screw driver. In case you damage/ break it - you can get one here. Gaggia classic portafilter

Hi, have a gaggia newespress006, gaggia expresso pure machine. I have descaled it and tried to do a backwash with the holder with no holes and it still continually leaks after using it for coffee? An

Look for easy stuff first. If you can get the top cover off, see if any of the piping/tubing joints are leaking.

If it leaks around the portafilter while making coffee, you need to change the portafilter gasket.

If water dribbles into the portafilter after making coffee, replace the three way valve.

If it is dribbling water in to the catch pan it is either the three way valve that needs to be replaced or the boiler gasket leaking and needs to be replaced.

Won't prime. I've run a full tank thru the steam wand and it still will not put water thru the basket

Remove the screw and screen then try to run water through without the portafilter in place, if water flows, check the holes in the screen they might be blocked, put the screen on the stove or other open flame to clean, coffee will burn before the metal does. Use plies and cool screen then reassemble and try without portafilter, if that works then change grind to something coarser. If that does not work, remove screen and then the 2 allen wrench screws and check the spring and valve seat above the diffuser, make sure it is not blocked, reassemble and try to run water through.

Coffee sprays from portafilter spouts while pulling shot

Either the group gasket is dirty or damaged. Also check the basket for damage.

The water temperature is only at 160 F. from the portafilter. What to do about this if 190 F is optimal?

Make sure portafilter is warmed up before checking or check without portafilter, descale boiler, and check to make sure thermostat and element is working properly, do a resistance test.

Gaggia classic, still drips coffee

Where is the drip for the coffee happening,is it around the portafilter, or the tube hanging in the drain tray on the left, or from the shower in the grouphead.
1- Around portafilter..since the machine is only 2 wks old the it is possible that coffee grounds are on the gasket in the head, get a hard toothbrush or buy a groupbrush and clean group gasket also check for damage.
2- Tube in drain tray...If it is a continuous drip whenever the machine is on then the nucleus in the solenoid is either dirty or damaged, try backwashing the machine. If it happens only when you make a coffee then that is the discharge on the solenoid working. Run a backwash on the group and that will cleann out the discharge.
3- If it is coming from the shower in the group then the solenoid needs to be replaced.

As for the steam wand leak it sounds as though the valve is not closing. That will have to be replaced because it cannot be rebuilt.5547512.jpg

Gaggia classic not producing hot coffee

Two questions; is the water coming out of the head without coffee hot and can you get steam out of the wand?. If yes to both then try running the group with the portafilter in it to warm that up before making a coffee.
