Possible carb or need to let warm up [choke]
Likely carburetor is fouled. First check fuel lines, impulse air, and filter. Dump fuel and fill with fresh mix. If still not right, clean carburetor. If still same problem then rebuild or replace carburetor. If still dies... then possible crankcase leak.
I had a weedeater that would do that on a 2-stroke motor. Had to adjust the screws on the carb for idle and run. That fixed my issue. Try searching for carb adjustment for your specific model.

May need to overhaul the carb. I suggest that you replace the fuel line and fuel filter too.

Could be not getting enough fuel. Check pick up tubing and filter in tank. Or could b the choke is not opening. You didn't mention what brand but some saws have a spring that returns the choke to the open position. If its not in place, then even with the choke lever in the open position the choke is not. Remove cover and observe the position to the choke plate. If the saw has been sitting, then a good carb cleaning is in order.

Check this post I made to someone recently that is in much the same boat as you....sounds like your low speed setting is too lean...this should be of some help. This help assumes there are the fuel system is in ok operating condition. If making adjustments on your carb has erratic or undesired results then you need to think about cleaning the carb and doublecheck the connection between carb and cylinder head for potential air leaks...make sure all mounting hardware is tight. Check the fuel filter in the tank and the line itself inside the tank as best you can.
