SOURCE: variable speed belt issue

Get your model and serial numbers from under the seat. Then go to the MTD website where you can download the owners manual which should show the belt diagram.

SOURCE: Engine speed varies

If the unit was stored for a long period of time (6-12 mo.) with gas in it, you may have a gummed up carburator. This is the most common problem with generators (lack of use)
The carb. would have to be removed & cleaned, specificly, the high & low speed jets

SOURCE: 609 yard machine tractor idler pulley spring broke

Here's a diagram, not a great copy, but it may help:
bdb5270.jpg

The spring hooks to the idler arm on the opposite end from where the pulley is mounted. The other end of the spring looks like it hooks to a raised tab on the deck, straight behind the left mower spindle. Hope this helps you, please rate my solution if so, thanks!

Model 13AX60KH011 how to change lower drive belt

Oh this one is fun to do (not).

  • Remove Deck so you access to underside of the frame.
  • Remove battery and battery tray.
  • Unhook the spring on the idler for the variable speed pulley to transmission belt. Take a fairly strong spring hook tool to do this.
  • Remove the six bolts holding the transaxle in so you can lower it to remove the transmission belt and then remove the engine to variable speed pulley belt.
  • Now loosen the two idlers on the engine to variable speed belt engagement pulley assembly so you can get the belt off them.
  • At the engine remove the center bolt holding on the stack pulley so you lower it to remove the belt.
  • Reassemble in reverse order.
  • Make you tighten the stack pulley center bolt to 55 ft-lbs.
  • Also use OEM spec belts only. No off the wall versions as they will give you nothing but trouble on MTDs.
And the customer wonders why we (the repair shops) charge so much to do this.

I HAVE A 1994 MTD 18HP BRIGGS WITH MOD #144Q828H118, WHILE I WAS MOWING THE CLUTCH WOULD NOT RELEASE AND THE GEAR SHIFT WILL NOT GO INTO THE LOWER GEARS. WHAT HAPPENED?

The tractor has a variable speed pulley for the 1-6 gears. You will want to check the top pulley on the shaft that is in the center of your tractor between the engine and transaxle. you may have broke the spring or adjuster.

Put a new top belt wont start we found a small soring but dont no where it goes went and started ok before belt went on . when turn key is like flat battery but had on charger not that help please

Hi

The belt goes on the top of the variable pulley and the transaxel pulley. There is a belt tentioner (flat Pulley) You need to remove the pulley and look on the bracket side closest to the clutch/break petal for a small hole for the spring. Put the spring hook in the hole through the top of the bracket, let it hang. Replace the pulley. Now remove the rear tire and rim on the left side of the mower. Clutch/ break is the left side. If you look where the tire use to be toward the front you will see the hole where the other end of the spring goes. The flat pulley goes toward the flat side of the belt.Pull the spring with a vice grip place the other hook in the hole.

Hope this helps

The variable pulley over the motor has come apart. how do I put it back together?

There is supposed to be a snap-ring with covering a cap with a spring that compresses the pulley and holds it together. Maybe one of those pieces has broken or is worn out. Most online repair parts places have an exploded diagram of all the parts and where they go so you can identify a replacement.

Transmission belt came off the pulley how do i get it back on?

Remove the shifter knob, 2 screws and wire for safety switch from the center plate on the tractor. This will give you access to the variable speed pulley and limited access to the transmission pulley. Reach in under the seat area toward the transmission and "feel" for the pulley, slip the new belt on there first but check to make sure you are inside any belt guards. Next you want to get the belt on the top groove of the variable speed pulley (you may need to remove the belt guide or POSSIBLY bend it just far enough to get the belt on then bend it back in place. Lastly, you need to get the back side of the belt against the flat surface on the tensioner pulley in between the transmission and variable speed pulleys. This is a very stout spring and takes some effort to do but I lift up on the edge of the belt with one hand just enough to clear it and pull the tensioner pulley over with the other hand.
You can Google " MTD 13al675g062 " without the quote marks and it will give you a pretty clear picture of it
