The notebook worked well until I tried to shut it down yesterday. Instead of shuting down the screen went dark blue and the Notebook did not react anymore. Pressing ctrl-alt-del or the power button for 12 sec did not help. I had to unplug the power cord and remove the battery.
When I press the Power button now the moon shaped indication LED and the power button are glowing. But nothing else happens (no fan noise, no screen, no beep, no HD access). To "turn it off" I again need to remove power cord and battery.
I treid some things like opening the notebook and disconnecting the BIOS battery. Nothing changed...
Any suggestions?
Will the laptop boot with the power adapter connected and battery removed? If so, boot it up and install the battery once it's booted up. If okay now, the battery was just really really drained. If okay with no battery but no good with battery, the battery may be bad, or something in the charging circuit may be defective - keep the battery out or replace mainboard ($$$$ - get a new laptop)
If no good with ac adapter and no battery, test the adapter with an electrical meter. It should be putting out 18-19 volts. If not, try a replacement adapter. If adapter tests good but laptop won't boot with no battery, likely the mainboard.
Also - remove hard drive and try to power up. If good, replace hard drive. If no good, reinstall hard drive and remove ram and try to power up. If it powers up, clean the ram and slot contacts gently with a pink pencil eraser and try testing each ram chip in each slot, 1 chip at a time. If still no good, start shopping for a new laptop.
Let me know if this helps or not...
Well if you've done the testing, then it certainly sounds like a bad mainboard.
The only other thing I can think of is to contact the manufacturer and see if perhaps this is a known issue that will qualify you for an out of warranty repair. I know this may sound nuts, but HP has known issues with mainboards on its dv line of laptops that causes them to not boot and just show a couple of led's. They often fix dead laptops out of warranty because this is a known issue.....seriously. Give it a shot. Also, some manufacturers may offer a reduced price on an exchange of the mainboard (you send them the dead one and they refurb it). Ask them. This may make the mainboard replacement affordable.
Good luck!

Thanks a lot. I tried all your suggestions, unfortunately no success.
The notebook does not boot, also when using only battery or ac adapter. It always goes to that strange state with "moon" LED and power button LED on.
After not using my notebook for 2 days, the battery LED (third from left) turned on when plugging in the power cord. For my understanding this means, that battery, power cord and charging circuit seem to be fine.
Removing HD or RAM did not change anything. The symptoms when turning on were the same.
I?m afraid I will have to get a new notebook. Any other suggestions what I can try?
