If you are replacing the bearing anyway, it doesn`t matter what happens to the bearing. Heat up the bearing over a flame getting it Very hot, the putting a shifting spanner os other spanner that can slide ofer the shaft but not the bearing, and hit the spanner with a hammer and that should move the bearing, Repeat until bearing is out.
*NOTE* Mark the shaft with something to show where the new bearing should be ( do not use a marking pen, it will burn off, use some thing metal but dont damage the shaft.)

Disconnect your shift and throttle cables, they may be reversed. See if the engine will shift now by hand. If it does not, then the problem was created when the shop benched the gear box and reinstalled it. Take it back even if it was last season. This kind of problem usually does not happen by itself.

mercury and others have a "sawtooth" cut for forward gear so the prop will rachet spin backward when dry tested, and a square clutch dog for reverse, which when it finally engages locks the prop in reverse. and will not spin in either direction.
So when you shift--- snap in in gear-- do not ease it in gear, as it will wear the dog out faster.
