SOURCE: shredder
Check for stuck paper and remove if any. Then check if motor is ok with a multimeter and also main switch.
SOURCE: Our shredder is making a loud, grinding noise.
simply try resetting the machine. unplugging it waiting for about 30 seconds then plugging it back in, also is the unit mounted properly on the unit? It might be one of the gears that is not broken...if you have a warranty now would be a good time to call them as they will fix or replace the part for the unit.
SOURCE: the shredder will run in reverse but will not run foreward.
Inside the shredder there is a motor which is wired to run both forward and backward, the way it does this is to transfer the power from the switch to a couple of wires on the motor
The forward running motor will be linked to the auto start button which will tell it to work with the paper sensor.
When you select the Forward function the Auto Start is taken out of circuit and the Forward switch should supply the motor
After all of that I would say that the switch is open circuit on the Forward contact and needs replacing

I have seen paper shreds build up inside the cutter housing on this model. It grows into a big tumor inside and places a lot of resistance. You will have to take it apart and clean it thoroughly. Also, oiling the cutter asm.

You dont give make or model???...however it sounds like you may have lost/broken a plastic gear inside..( the normal sound is the motor running??)...open it up to see what has been broken then contact the manufacturer.
This call was logged under "ROYAL" so if it is a Royal shredder you can contact them at 1-800-524-0799 for parts assistance once you know what is broken.
