SOURCE: john deere 2010 tractor. pto grinds and wont engage

The PTO usually has a clutch that has to be engaged so that you can select the PTO rotation setting. I had a problem like that on my tractor and all it needed was a little adjustment on the PTO clutch lever, so it could disengage the PTO gearbox properly.

SOURCE: my pto wont go in gear; 8n tracter.

Try it while just coming to a stop.or just starting to move forward.
Depress the clutch and push it back towards engagement position....because it's tied to wheel speed the moving parts might allow it to drop in.

Check your mower deck spindles and belt. If belt is slipping at all the PTO will not engage.

I have a brand new craftsman z550. Just picked it up I can not get the pto to engage help please I must be doing something wrong

Try the following.

With brake on, PTO off, turn key to run position. Do not start engine. Then pull PTO switch to the on position then push off position.

You should hear the PTO clutch engage then disengage. It makes a clank or pop sound.

No sound likely means electrical issue. Check fuses and electrical connection at the PTO clutch.

Tractor pto grinds and wont engage, but if I disconnect the cutter. it works engage fine

Sounds like there may be a problem with the cutter.
Sometimes the drive/spindle connections get damaged (especially if you've been mowing rocks like I sometimes do).

Pull switch on blades but they won't engage worked fine until i got stuck in some mud now won't engage

Blades would not turn after I got stuck in mud. Electric clutch.

  • Turn the engine off and remove the key.
  • Check for physical damage; anything look bent?
  • Is the deck belt intact?
  • Spin the pulley on the bottom of the clutch. Does it spin freely?
  • There could be mud or grit stuck in the clutch.
  • There is a drive key between the clutch and the shaft. Has this key been sheared?
  • When you pull the PTO switch does the clutch make a "click"? It's possible the clutch was burnt out during the mud incidence.
PTO Clutch will not engage or stay engaged.
There is a very fine discussion on evaluating electric clutches at this site:
http://www.messicks.com/Articles/FixingElectricClutch.aspx

My JD tech manual, which covers the entire LA 100 series, agrees with the electrical specifications. It states that the Electric PTO Clutch should show the following:
  • Resistance 3.7 ohms
  • Current Draw 3.25 amps.
  • It does not give the air gap.
It does include a note to check the PTO Clutch Key for damage or if missing. So there is a drive key between the PTO Clutch and the shaft. Additionally, it recommends checking the tightness of the cap screw. That's the screw or bolt that holds the clutch on the shaft.
  • Cap Screw torque 55 lb-ft (75 N.m).

John Deere L110 Mower wont engage

Depending on which type of PTO you have the problem could be simple to diagnose... if you have an electric PTO, you may be dealing with a bad switch... if electric, you should have good tension on the belt at all times. If it is a lever that you push/pull to engage the blades, then it would seem that the tensioner pulley is not applying the required tension on the belt... could be a broken spring or a worn/slipping belt (not enough tension)... hope that gives you somewhere to look into...

I have a Craftsman FS5500 48" lawn mower. The PTO makes a noise (squeak) for a second when I pull up on the red blade engage knob. The blades do not engage. PTO does not turn. When I push the red...

Hi,
The problem is probably in the button that you pull and push to engaged and disengage the PTO... If you wiggle the button or try to pull it slowly, you may find a spot where it will work. But the button has gone bad and will need to be replaced.
If you are comfortable with wiring, you could jumper the wires and getting it working, but it would be a very temporary and possibly dangerous fix...

Craftsman 26hp Garden Tractor PTO not working

If you changed the belt make sure it did not interfere with the wire that runs from the pto clutch, sometimes that belt can rub on the wire and wear through it,also if you had the clutch off make sure you aligned the steel retainer bolt that sets in the alignment hole on the pto clutch, this keeps the clutch from spring when disengaged if you don't get that pin through the hole in clutch it can push on the clutch and bind it.Also it may be possible to plug that pto switch in backwards. Also if you jumped the fuse out it may now have burnt the switch or wiring somewhere.
