There are a lot of advantages to installing a garbage disposal in your kitchen. Here are just a few of them.

1. It saves time
First off, it saves time. There's nothing more annoying than having to scrape off the little bits of leftovers of every single dish one by one before you wash them. With a garbage disposal unit, you don't have to.

2. Less wastage
As your unit will break up the leftovers into tiny pieces, there is less wastage to worry about and your trash can will stay empty for longer.

3. More hygienic
By breaking up your garbage so it passes through your plumbing, little bits of food won't get stuck in your pipes. This is more hygienic and will help you to avoid nasty odors

4. Better for your plumbing
Obviously, this is the main benefits. The best garbage disposal units will ensure you have no more blockages! Click here for more information.

5. Save money
Even though you have to pay for the unit itself, you'll save money on food bags, the costs of which add up over years of use.

SOURCE: How to knock out garbage disposal plug

Turn off the power source to the garbage disposal. Take the drain hose from the dishwasher off the connector going to the disposal (if connected). Insert a flat blade screwdriver in the drain hose fitting and tap a few times with a hammer. The plastic plug will pop off inside the garbage disposal. Reach inside from the top of the disposal to retrieve the plastic plug. Sometimes you have to use a little force to tap the plug out. Hope this helps you.

SOURCE: Removing dishwasher drain plug on a new garbage disposal.

The plug is thin plastic. Use a flat blade screw driver and a hammer to knock it out. I know this sounds primitive but this is how it is done. I have been a plumber for thirty years.

I have a badger 9 garbage disposal unit, and it leaks after installing from the discharge outlet at the top of the discharge tube under the side flange. I replaced a badger 1 and I used the old gasket as...

Location of leak is not known for sure.
Sounds like leak is where tubular drain pipe connects to side of disposal?
If leak is where disposal connects to sink, typically this connection is sealed using plumbers putty.

Open following link for disposal instructions:

1) If leak is at rubber gasket for tailpiece connection on side of disposal:
I don't know if your local home depot sells gaskets. Probably not sold separately.

2) Go to home depot and take rubber gasket out of a new garbage disposal box.

3) Or buy new disposal with a gasket, use the gasket and return disposal saying that part was missing..

4) To seal old gasket, use rectoseal white pipe joint compound.
Cover the gasket with rectoseal and then assemble parts.
Open following link above for photo of rectoseal.
I always use rectoseal on tubular drain connections for 100% seal first time every time.

MY GARBAGE DISPOSAL IS WORKING BUT THE WATER IS NOT DRAINING. I TRIED THE ALLEN WRENCH BUT DONT HAVE THE CORRECT SIZE. CAN YOU TELL ME WHAT SIZE TO PURCHASE PLEASE

Use a broomstick handle down inside the disposal to wedge the cutter disk free.
Broomstick works just like allen wrench.

If cutter disk rotates, then clean out the tubular pipe that connects to disposal.
Remove trap under sink, and then remove tailpiece connected to side of disposal.
Clean out disposal.

I wrote tips for working on tubular drain pipes that might help.

My garbage disposal stopped working sometimes it sounds like it wants to start for just a second but it never does. should I buy a new one?

If disposal is getting power and will not start, then motor has gone bad.

My garbage disposal makes grinding noise, as if glass or metal is in it; I've checked and checked and see nothing; what could be causing this problem?

Thanks, Geno_3245. Another thing you may be able to try is this:
(1) find your "garbage disposal wrench" - an offset Allen wrench designed to be inserted int the bottom of the disposal which was supplied with the unit (in a little plastic baggie) when the unit was brand new.
(2) with poweroff, insert the whench into the bottom of the disposal and use it to manually turn the impeller around a few times an see if anything pops loose.
If nothing comes loose, its the bearing screaming before it dies, like Geno_3245 says... so start pricing a new replacement.

Dishrag caught un disposal, pulled it out, blades turn, it just hums, it hums even when switch is turned on off!!

If cutter disk turns freely and motor hums, then motor winding has gone bad.
The humming sound means motor is overheating and will stop humming.

Sink only drains when garbage disposal is run. Have cleaned trap, snaked pipe and no clogs still wont drain unless disposaln is tturned on.

Sounds like a clog inside disposal.
Water should run freely through disposal.
Remove both nuts on p-trap and trap falls loose.
Put bucket under tubular drain from disposal.
Turn water on to see if water runs out of disposal.
You might need a de-greaser, drain cleaner or CLR
