Sounds like the high voltage power supply is in the process of dying.
This would leave the sound unaffected.
I don't know if you have a separate supply for this or if a part of the main supply.
If you remove the back (after unplugging and allowing a couple of hours to pass), check inside to see if there are two boards with larger components on them.
If so, look to see if one of them has more to do with the plasma display than the other; this would be the high voltage source.
This is probably repairable but you might want to check on repair vs. replacement cost before shipping it to anyone.
