I accidentally touched a speaker wire to the metal spikes on the bottom of my speaker. My Onkyo TX-NR757 now reads NG : L R BLBR. I had it biamped so I assume it is both amps. I have tried to reset it several times to no avail. Is my receiver done ?

"I accidentally touched a speaker wire to the metal spikes on the bottom of my speaker. " This action makes +B voltage (positive voltage) short to ground. You may assume 2 power transistors mounted on a large heat sink are defective. Now try to remenber which speaker terminals was accidentially shorted. Then check this terminal or you should check all power transistors mounted on the heat sink, by measuring the collector and emitter resistance. Normal value is Mega ohms and all white 3 pins resistor with 0.22ohm should also be checked if they are open( infinity resistance).I have tried to reset it several times to no avail. Of course, due to defective power transistors. Is my receiver done? Yes. I wrote detailed troubleshooting steps used in onkyo service dept. a year ago, just find it out in my answers. - 210cda21-872d-438d-949c-2196ccf76712.jpg

For your case, DET. PROTECT: I instead if entering debug mode.
NG L R BL BR, This amp is under DC protect.

SOURCE: Crossed speaker wires...did I destroy my amp?

Most likely what you did was burn out the output transistors to the center channel. and probably the Bias resistors that control them. The parts themselves would be inexpensive. But they would probably have to come straight from Onkyo. And you would have to know there part number. And to get matched complimentaries. Mark up. And how far into the circuit the damage went. If I was to repair it I would probably put $100 to $125. But depending on the age of the unit and what a new won would cost is what I would use to decide to replace or restore.

SOURCE: Powered Or Unpowered Subwoofers For Onkyo TX-8511

Greg- Powered subs are better than non-powered subs (also known as passive subs), anyway I see the TX-8511 has no sub pre-out on the back panel, so you need to decide what sub you will use and run from the receivers left and right speakers output into a subwoofers speaker in from speakers then back out to speakers, look at the back of a subwoofer and you will see like 4 sets of speaker hookups 2 in and 2 out, what this does is takes the low end or bass and drops the signal to the subwoofer then takes the mids and highs out to your left and right speakers, unless your regular left and right stereo speakers have large woofers a sub is the way to go.

SOURCE: Speaker Detect error Left Rear

Hey there.

I had the same problem until i figured out that if u dont have surround speakers connected it will be a error when trying to configure the rear surround speakers.

So if u are running a 5.1 system and have hooked up ur surround speakers to the back surround speaker port u have to change them to the surround speaker port.

Hope this work for u

My onkyo tx-8211 reciever goes in to protect mode

The manual for the tx-8211 says that the total impedance for when you have both A and B speakers on are 8 ohms before it goes into protection mode. So look on the back of the speakers and read the impedance and add them up for that side of the speakers. You can wire them in series and it should fix them. I know this is a tad bit late by yknow two years but I’m bored and have nothing else to do.

My onkyo reciever (tx-ds656) powers on, then after a couple seconds says "protect" and powers down. why is this happening? [email protected]

"protect" comes on for 4 reasons.

1. crossed or damaged speaker wires- make sure that the positive and negative is not crossed at all. inspect the wiring for any loose strands of wire that might be crossed, touching the speaker frame or touching the metal case of the amp. look for any damage to the wires. use new speaker wires, if you need to.

2. improper speaker ohmage- verify that your speakers are 8 ohms or greater. ohmage is usually labeled on the back of the speaker, and will have the greek letter "Omega" ω next to the ohmage rating. example: 8ω or 16ω.

3. blown speaker- push in on the woofers, it should move freely for an inch or 2 before bottoming out. if it feels like its scratchy or rubbing or there is any resistance before it bottoms out, then the speaker's voice coil is melted.

4. blown amp.

Hi, after i turn the power on and then press the stand-by button, it clicks off to stand-by mode instantly. This is an Onkyo TX-SR500

This indicates that the system is going into protect mode. First disconnect all speaker wires (with the power cable disconnected). Then turn the unit on and see if it sill shuts aff ofter a few seconds. If it does not, then you have a problem with the speakers or speaker wires. inspect the wires at both ends for frayed strands that may touch. If that all lookd good, plu the speakers in, one at a time, until the problem reappears. Be sure to turn the sytem off before plugging in any speaker just to prevent any accidental short which could be catastrophic. If the system goes into protect mode with all speakers disconnected, you probably have a shorted output transistor.

The receiver keeps turing it self off after a few min. in all modes

Check all speaker wires for shorts as this can shut down the receiver. The end may protrude too far into the chassis and touch the metal frame, this could cause a short. Try disconnecting one speaker at atime to eliminate a bad one.....

I just hooked up my old Onkyo TX-8511 receiver to my bose speakers, which is also hooked up to a subwolfer. When I turn the volume up the system goes into protect mode. Any solutions.

Just check your speaker cabling again. Make sure that all of them are seated properly, none is touching each other or the body of receiver. Rewire if necessary..
Are you using banana plugs for connecting speaker or just directly. Some times even a little tiny wire touching the receiver could trigger the protect mode. Be careful, since protect mode is sometimes not fast enough and it could blown a few trasistors in the power circuit.

Otherwise, do your bose speakers play out load on other systems?

Onkyo TX-SR 606 KEEPS CLICKING INSTEAD OF TURNING ON WHEN POWERED

Here are your options:

1. An electrical problem, where your receiver has a grounding problem.
2. Your speaker wire connections are actually touching each other and that's why your receiver is not turning on.

Onkyo TX-SR500 5.1 Receiver Last night

1-disconnect subwoofer first and test-and then disconnect surround speakers-and front speaker after-and later center speaker.ever time you disconnect you check the operation until you find the bad one(or two)which make the problem change its cable first and then change speaker itself.if all above failed contact the service center.
