"I accidentally touched a speaker wire to the metal spikes on the bottom of my speaker. " This action makes +B voltage (positive voltage) short to ground. You may assume 2 power transistors mounted on a large heat sink are defective. Now try to remenber which speaker terminals was accidentially shorted. Then check this terminal or you should check all power transistors mounted on the heat sink, by measuring the collector and emitter resistance. Normal value is Mega ohms and all white 3 pins resistor with 0.22ohm should also be checked if they are open( infinity resistance).I have tried to reset it several times to no avail. Of course, due to defective power transistors. Is my receiver done? Yes. I wrote detailed troubleshooting steps used in onkyo service dept. a year ago, just find it out in my answers.
For your case, DET. PROTECT: I instead if entering debug mode.

SOURCE: Crossed speaker wires...did I destroy my amp?
Most likely what you did was burn out the output transistors to the center channel. and probably the Bias resistors that control them. The parts themselves would be inexpensive. But they would probably have to come straight from Onkyo. And you would have to know there part number. And to get matched complimentaries. Mark up. And how far into the circuit the damage went. If I was to repair it I would probably put $100 to $125. But depending on the age of the unit and what a new won would cost is what I would use to decide to replace or restore.

Audio amplifier IC's damaged you need to change it.Good luck
SOURCE: Powered Or Unpowered Subwoofers For Onkyo TX-8511
Greg- Powered subs are better than non-powered subs (also known as passive subs), anyway I see the TX-8511 has no sub pre-out on the back panel, so you need to decide what sub you will use and run from the receivers left and right speakers output into a subwoofers speaker in from speakers then back out to speakers, look at the back of a subwoofer and you will see like 4 sets of speaker hookups 2 in and 2 out, what this does is takes the low end or bass and drops the signal to the subwoofer then takes the mids and highs out to your left and right speakers, unless your regular left and right stereo speakers have large woofers a sub is the way to go.

if you go to the setup menu, hardware setup, hdmi, and turn the audio out: on it should work hope this helps
SOURCE: Speaker Detect error Left Rear
Hey there.
I had the same problem until i figured out that if u dont have surround speakers connected it will be a error when trying to configure the rear surround speakers.
So if u are running a 5.1 system and have hooked up ur surround speakers to the back surround speaker port u have to change them to the surround speaker port.
Hope this work for u
