Most of the Galaxy Tab A models do not support an MHL signal with an adapter between the micro-USB port to HDMI port. To connect it to a TV, you'd need a Chromecast or similar device connected to the HDMI port of the TV. Then connect your tablet to the Chromecast for screen-sharing. For some TVs with wi-fi, you can use the All-Share app instead.
This is the case for the Galaxy Tab A (2016) 10.1" model. I don't see any Galaxy Tab A devices with MHL support here: http://www.mhltech.org/devices.aspx . Samsung stopped providing the MHL connections on most of the devices by 2015, depending on the country where the device was sold. See http://blog.clove.co.uk/2014/02/05/mhl-adapter-samsung-galaxy-need/ . To check your device, look at the micro-USB port, if it has 11 pins then it might support MHL.
I wish that I had better news for you. Please add a comment with the generation/year of production for your Galaxy Tab A for further information about the specifications.

Hi,
Welcome to Fixya. To connect the Galaxy Tab to a Tv you need to use the cable below. The cable is color coded so make sure you connect it to the right port on the tv. If it is already connected use the TV remote then look for an Input or Source button then select Video or TV/Video
Connect your Samsung Galaxy Tab to your TV with this Original Samsung AV Cable. The 30 pin to composite video cable will allow you to connect your Samsung Galaxy Tab to your television or projector easily.
This will enable you to watch videos and picture slideshows stored on your device. Connecting the Samsung Galaxy Tab to your TV or projector with this cable will also allow you to use the sound from your television or surround sound system to give a richer, fuller sound.
If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya

It sounds to me like you have an issue with your Galaxy Tab's charging port.
Fortunately it is still under warranty if you've just recently purchased it.
Take it back to the store or contact Samsung for a warranty replacement. They may be able to help you recover items from the memory.
Hope this helped!
Thanks!

Hold the power button down for up to 15 seconds. This should hard reset it. Not to be confused with erasing data.
