SOURCE: gas leak out or the carburetor

Thiis usually caused by a failure of either the float valve or the float itself.

Bad float needle valve: If some dirt or other particle gets stuck on the needle valve or seat, the valve will not be able to completely close and fuel will continue to flow into the bowl and eventually overflow. A new needle valve and seat are < $5.00 on-line.

Bad float: If the circular float gets a hole in it, fuel will get inside and the "float" will get heavy and no longer float on top of the fuel in the bowl. Because it doesn't float it will not rise high enough to push the needle up into the seat and keep extra fuel from entering the bowl. A new circular float is < $10 on-line.

Tecumseh snowblower hmsk 80-110. It won't start. Tried the electric and manual. Changed out gas....thinking to start with the spark plug.I have never done this and husband is out of town

Possibly the carburetor float is stuck and/or stale fuel in the carburetor bowl. Loosen bowl retainer to drain fuel from carburetor bowl.

See page 8. The primer pressurizes the carburetor fuel bowl forcing fuel up the carburetor nozzle where it pools at the intake. It requires the following;

  1. Fuel at sufficient level in carburetor bowl.
  2. Functional bowl gasket (no leaks).
  3. Functional primer, line, and fittings (no leaks).
  4. Proper carburetor ventilation

I have a Suffolk punch 14 s with a Tecumseh engine model number AQ148 when I turn off the throttle petrol leaks out of the air filter please could you tell me how to fix the problem. Many thanks Neil

If engine runs fine and thats only problem the quick is a fuel shut off valve install and turn gas off before shut engine off or I think it is fuel float in carburetor that will need to be set or replaced.

Just installed a new carburetor on a Tecumseh Snow King 8 hp engine. Gas is getting to the carburetor but no gas is filling the bowl and engine won't start

Sounds like the carb needle valve is stuck closed. Try loosening the bolts holding the carb to the engine, then tapping the carb lightly with a hammer. If gas then flows to the carb, re-tighten the carb bolts evenly and not too tightly.

Ran perfect last yr , gas was stale drained carb bowl and replaced gas it started up right away then cuople mins later it started blowing oil out of the oil over flow tube

Sounds like the Needle valve in the carburetor is stuck 'down' letting gas continually run from gas tank into carb. When the valve can't go up (Close) gas will run past the carburetor and into the crank case I bet your oil is full of gas. Check oil level see if it is overfull

The needle and seat are bad in the carburetor. You need a tecumseh part 631021barterjoe_2.jpg and it might be recommended to get a service manual. They are inexpensive at a shop like www.arcolawn.com
good luck

Gas is leaking around top edge of the carburetor bowl. Is the float defective and causing overflow? Or something as simple as the gasket that seals the rim? Happens when I push the primer button.

Sounds like it would be the gasket seals or its just where its got to much gas in the carburetor. It shouldn't be a problem though as long as it doesn't leak while its running. My gokart does it sometimes. Its not that big of a problem.

Tecumseh Carburator Adjustments settings

Usually a Tecumseh with these symptoms has a clogged jet somewhere. If you dismantle the carburetor and clean out all of these tiny holes with a wire or something and spray it off with carburetor cleaner and reassemble it, it should work. Turn the adjustment screws in just until they touch the seats counting the turns and reassemble it with them the same number of turns off of the seats. Also, put fresh gas in it if you haven't. Gas being left in them is the main cause of this. If you put Sta-Bil in the gas before putting it away or run it out of gas it should prevent this from happening in the future.
