Yo! had same issue "my iphone 3gs wont wake after going sleep during incoming calls, msgs..etc"
Here is the way I found the solution -
1. finde sleepbot app in store. (it is free! and thanks to developers!)
2. install it.. lunch
3. now you are going to set alarm time and activate smart sleep option there - thats it! collapse the app and use your phone as regular, it will prevent the phone from deep sleep and just alarm clock option active at bg will not really shorten battery charge:)
ps. overall very good app for self sleep tracking!
have fun:D

1- Turn off the 3G Feature:
U will find it in Settings -> General ->Network.
2- In case if u have upgraded ur phone to version 3.0.1
Go to Settings -> Mails,Contacts,Calenders -> Fetch New Data.Turn off the Push feature, And for the fetch option select "Manually".Now under the fetch criteria click on advance .Here u can c a list of added addresses. Now set the settings for each address to 'Manual' instead of 'Push' or 'Fetch'. Now again go to settings and turn of Notification feature.Hope it helps :)
